My sys specs are
P4 3.07 Ghz
1 gig of ram
Asus P4t533 motherboard with 4x AGP 1.5v
Radeon 9700 pro.

I want to upgrade to a radeon 800xt or xtpe if I can find one. Would I see a good improvement? Thanks in advance.

You would see an improvement but i wouldnt recommend it. Its not hardly a huge upgrade, id stick with that nice 9700pro until you really need to get a new one.

I just upgraded to a 9800pro and i doubt ill need a new card for a few years.

It depends what you're happy with. Your processor will probably bottleneck your 9700Pro at 1024x768 in a lot of games and there's nothing wrong with the card. However, if you've got the money and aren't feeling satisfied with the performance of the 9700Pro, the X800 XT/PE will offer definite improvements. Check out some of the charts here:

Basically, the best of the new gen is twice the speed of your current card - a lot more than this at some things, less in others. Certainly you would notice a lot of improvement in that you'd be playing everything at 1280x1024 4xaa 8xaf, with high frames per second.

If you don't have money waiting to be spent, there's nothing wrong with your current card.

Will you consider Nvidia cards ? If yes, the 6800GT is the best bang for the buck and a nice improvement from your 9700 Pro.

For the unrealistic amount of money you want to spend you will not see a "worthwhile" enhancement. The question you need to ask yourself is..is it really worth 300(or more) dollars to get a few more frames and a higher res?

I agree "If you don't have money waiting to be spent, (but) there is nothing wrong with your current card."

If you play games, then yes it is an improvement. If you dont play games, then no need to upgrade......

How can we determine "improvement".. if it is the amount of money vs the actual in game enhancement you will see..is there not a better faucet to spend your money on ATM?

Simple fact is that the 9700 becomes the bottleneck of the system once you hit 2.4 ghz with a intel cpu... so yes the x800 would be a huge improvement. And to the guy that said to get a 6800gt uh lol depends on the games you like to play ... the ati's are almost 40% faster in half life 2 over the nvidia flavors... Anyways yes yes yes

I'm afraid that 40% faster comment is not quite up to date.

Performance btw 6800gt and x800 pros are around the same +/- 10% max......I ended with the 6800gt because of the additional pipelines, SM3, and HDL. But x800s are nice also...

Thanks all of you for your responses.

Yeah I have the money so its not really a problem and yes my primary use for my comp is gaming.
