I greatly enjoyed Fallout 3 and NV.

Wanting some new games to play.. Would I like Skyrim? Watching a little bit of play through videos it doesn't look to bad.

I loved it when I was playing it, and considering as with all other Bethesda games it is WICKED mod friendly, so your money worth is a 10k% assured if you love these games. watch what mods you use of course or it could become not the smoothest experience and ala Bethesda watch the amount of save spots being use am sure you will very much enjoy it. A buddy of mine is going to pick it up and he is SO not into these games.

I'm an old fogey who climbed back in to RPGs with Skyrim from Ultima (I kid you not). It's a little overwhelming but I'm sure you'll like it.

I am not a big fan of sandbox type games. I put Skyrim down after an hour for agggeesssss. Then one day it just clicked and I think I'm up to lvl 20 or so now.

I would recommend setting the difficulty higher than you think you should. I'm one shotting just about everything.

I enjoyed Fallout 3 and NV as well. But I HATED Skyrim. It's combat system was intolerable to me. You may like it but I'm just saying that liking Fallout 3 and NV isn't a good benchmark for Skyrim.

Skyrim is certainly similar to the Fallout games, but combat is very different. There's no VATS and things are (usually) more up-close and personal. It's also much quicker as a result.
The core of the game will be familiar, though.
Some people said the new Fallout games were just "The Elder Scrolls with guns." While not entirely true, that phrase comes up enough that at least a fair number of people see it that way.

+1 Different setting, different weapons so the combat is different. You have a bow for range attacks but no guns. The basic game design is very similar to Vegas and Fallout. Get quests from NPCs, go around an open world killing baddies and exploring, finding loot.

The latest Fallouts were definitely 'Elder Scrolls in the fallout setting'. You'll like Skyrim.

At its best it is as immersive a game as I have ever played. Worth the effort to mod and tweak to the hilt just for the experience.

Skyrim needs mods to really be enjoyed more than once. The Main Quest especially is a one or two hit wonder.

Further combat tweaks etc really improve the game. It was kinda nerfed for consoles.

Yes, as Skripka states, mods really help this game.
Ive played all the fallouts and oblivian and in skyrim I have over 2000 hours ... so, Im a bit biased.

If for nothing else go on walkabout and check out everything to see. There are tons of things to see and explore. Now days I dont even start the main quest till Im at least level 40.

Whats interesting is I have little to no interest in Elder Scrolls online. Not just the money, the parts of the game Ive seen are .... lacking.

What mods do you recommend that.. enhance the game.. but say, don't take over the story line (or maybe just ads to it).

I was atleast gonna go with the High Res DLC pack.

Dude-I just started playing this game like a week ago. It's been in my steam library since I bought it on launch day. I saw some enb mods on YouTube and I am hooked...frekking mod addicted....I can't stop...lol

For Immersion and visuals, I recommend the realvsion ENB mod....so frekking awesome...There are a lot of good mods, and you are just going to have to try and experiment....

The Official "high res" pack only starts to cover it texture wise.

-First get the 2K texture packs off Nexus http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/607/?
-This makes waterlook far better: http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/13268/?
-As far as lighting/environment http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/27043/?
-For gameplay/skills overhauls I strongly recommend ACE overhaul: http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/10037/?
-Terrain that is far away looks kinda pooish in default...fix for that: http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/1598/?
-Vampirism in the vanilla game is very much an afterthought that is not very immersive or interesting. Better Vampires 6.5 bridges the gap see: http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/9717/?
-Skyrim by default is very empty and rather devoid of a population. These mods fix that: http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/36334/? and http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/9759/?
-Sounds can use improvement too: http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/5289/? also http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/46518/?

By default the stock game has a very clunky console-esque interface that breaks immersion...these fix that:

http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/3222/?
-3rd person view is kind of awkward over the shoulder...don't like that, this is better: http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/7430/?

Pay special note to specified dependencies like Skyrim Script Extender (SKSE). The extra functionality granted by SKSE is well worth the extra time to set it up.

There are tons of good armor/clothing/character mods out there to spiff up or fix the vanilla player character and NPCs. I'd also recommend the Unofficial Patches on Nexus.

**If you have the Dawnguard DLC I *strongly* recommend this mod: http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=21615 keeps rather nice merchants in towns from getting killed by random attacks due to Dawnguard. Dawnguard DLC by itself is quite a bit of fun, I have yet to get to the Dragonborn DLC after all the hours I've put into Skyrim.

Once you've beaten the Main Quest a handful of times and it becomes bland...this spices things up and greatly adds replay value: http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/9557/?

Wow.. thanks, I'll keep this bookmarked for now.

Going with Skyrim on Steam.. will it effect some of these mods?

Shouldn't matter. Especially now that patches to Skyrim have ceased. I'm on Steam Skyrim as well. None of those mods modify the game in a manner Steam should care about or notice anyway.

Steam has its own "workshop" of mods for the game...but the site is punk-ass. They limit all mods to like 100MB per mod file...which is barely enough for one med-high res armor armor

Many of the mods you see above are available through the Seam workshop. No need to do external mods.

Yea there is...most of those mods are well over the Steam Workshop file size limit. Workshop blows ass compared to what is possible on Nexus.

I'm a huge FPS fan for over 20 years and never played a RPG until skyrim. It was awesome. I put it down for a year but recently started playing again. I have almost 250 hours logged. Great game

I honestly think that's enough. I use a couple mods to suppress overly-loud bear sounds and to change the ragdoll dynamics, but it's really pretty simple stuff. The big 'overhaul' mods you absolutely needed for Oblivion aren't really needed for Skyrim.

Although you can go by recommendations, you really don't know what you're going to need, mod-wise, until you understand what the vanilla game is and what aspects of it you end up not liking.

This is what I thought when I first started dabbling in Skyrim mods, which wasn't all that long ago (I came late to the Skyrim party just like OP). However it quickly became apparent that workshop is severely limiting and Nexus Mod Manager is an ABSOLUTE MUST. And its dummy-simple - literally one-click installation, deletion and auto-updating of all mods.

If I was in OP's shoes and knowing what I know now, I would start with a very minimal set of mods and just start playing the game, then add more mods as you go. Don't make the mistake I made where I only made it about 25% into the campaign and then modding became an addiction to the point it became the game. I would start any new playthrough with these minimum:

Nexus Mod Manager
SKSE
SkyUI
Unofficial Skyrim Patch (tens of thousands of community hours went into fixing campaign bugs that Bethesda never bothered to do themselves)
Unofficial Dawnguard Patch
Unofficial Dragonborn Patch
Unofficial Hearthfire Patch

This is the one-stop-shop for Nexus Mod Manager and all the mods: http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/topalltime/?

Wow.. Thanks for all the responses guys.

I may have to do New Vegas next, i played through about 75% of it on PS3.. It got kinda repetitive at that point. I've got on steam though, might have to mod it as well.
