Hi, rite now i have a asus a8n sli board 7800 gtx 2g of corshair xmx pro ram and a san diego 4000+ clocked at 2.4ghz. i play cod2 with graphics at extra at 1280x960 and 2x aa with antistrophic flitering on. and i only get at max 40 fps is that rite??? also i was thinking of maby oc'ing my processor to possibly 2.7ghz or 2.6ghz. and if i did that would i gain a great noticable increase in fps. also when i play css at full everything the fps doesnt drop below 150.

i'm going to venture a guess and say no, you won't see much performance increase. at those settings, you're more video card limited than CPU limited. that said, there's no reason why you couldn't try overclocking. at best, you get a nice performance increase, at worst, you lose a few hours of your life.

OCing your proc might gain you something, or it might gain you nothing. you have a potent enough proc that it may or may not be you limiting factor.

different games are optimized differently. just because you get good performance in one game doesn't mean that you're going to get good performance in a much more demanding game, depending on how each is optimized.

OC your proc to whatever is 24 hrs prime 95 torture test stable. testing experimental clocks with the super pi 32M test will give you some idea if the setting might potentially be stable, but the gold standard is prime95.

plenty of people will now tell you that prime is too picky, that it will limit your overclock, and that they aren't prime stable but that they're game stable.

tell me, if you're working on an assignment for school or a report for work: do you worry that your system is TOO stable?

prime95 is a high standard to hold yourself to. if you are stable through a 24 hour run of prime95 torture test, unless you're running some poorly coded software, your CPU and RAM are stable.

get what you can out of your proc, in order to max your FPS in the games that you like to play, but don't comprimise your stabiulity as a result.

even if it doesn't help with you max FPS, i'll honestly say that OCing really helps with keeping stable FPS, which helps you to max your settings without screwing yourself when things get hairy.

Well, while we're here, in my rig (check sig) is the CPU the bottleneck? or what is? Im pretty sure OC'ing my proc will actually help fps a little.....what do you guys think? Note: proc running at 2ghz right now, can get to 2.2 w/ stock cooler, im buying a new high performance blah blah blah cooler soon, so im guessing 2.3 +, but again, will this help fps?

may help a little. probably won't help a lot. getting you mem speed up a bit will probably help more than increased CPU speed, however you're running a system that means you'll have to up proc speed to improve mem speed, so it's not like you can seperate the effect of the two factors.
