Hi, i dont know much bout Dual Core processors, so i was wondering if i could ask u guys some questions

The main things that i would like to do on my PC would be;

Firstly, it will most proberly be dual monitors, and i would like to be able to listen to music, or watch DVD's whilst Programming (c, c++), or playing videogames on the other monior, without it studdering. At the moment, i have a 2.8 P4, and it cannot simutaniously play DVD (viewing, encoding) on one monitor, whilst something else is happening on the other monitor.

My main question is, will X2 3800+, stop this (it will only be paried with 1gig of ram, and 6600gt), or would i be better going for a 3800+, single core?

Second main question, will dual core be worst than single, in terms of videogame performance? (specifically the two ive mentioned, x2 3800+, 3800+)

Thx for any help

Get the X2 and not the single core 3800+.If you want to use the computer while encoding something then you will need to use an X2. And no it shouldn't be worse in gaming especially seeing as nVidia drivers now make use of dual cores.

QFT

The X2 3800+ will best the Pentium 4 2.8GHz chip any day of the week. The X2 is really the best choice for your application.

I don't get how u can compare a Dual core to HT, HT and Dual core is completely different HT on simulates dual processor while X2 is actually 2 physical.

I didn't. If you read my post, there is NO mention of hyperthreading at all. I know what it is too. I simply said that the X2 would be the best choice for his application, and that the X2 is going to be a significant upgrade over a 2.8GHz Pentium 4, which is what he is using now according to his post.

If you want HT and dual core X2's compared, I can certainly do that. :D

Get 2 GB of RAM with the x2, and no less!

For the application the original poster had mentioned the system would be used for, I would also recommend 2GB of ram.

For the use case that you describe, I would go with the DC CPU and 2+ GB of RAM.

The dual core clock for clock with the new drivers from nVidia will be slightly ahead of the single core.So for gaming the dual cores shine as well as in any other area you listed .

i dont think u have to worry about the video game performance....i run FEAR at the cpu settings at max and have no problems, i have the same vid card and that is what holds me back but its still an awesome card dont get me wrong....but i have two gigs of ram

No, the performance will be equal to that of a single core CPU at the same clock speed.

BTW Quake 4 supports SMP, so dual core owners can rejoice!!!
