would better memory help my folding?

Question - I'm currently runnning an AMD X2 3800+ in a Abit AN8 Ultra mobo. It folks 24x7. I have it overclocked (using the Big Typhoon cooler) at 2.5g. Problem (mebbe) that I'm using some fairly cheap kingston memory that I picked up a compusa - 2x512 sticks. I upped the voltage on them, but still have to run the memory at DDR 333 in order to have a successful 2.5G oc.

I know that with folding, cpu speed is king, so I wouldn't want to lower the speed in order to maintain a 1:1 DDR 400 mem ratio. Would it be worth it in terms of decreased frame rates if I replaced the kingston with some DDR 500 or so memory that I knew I could run at 1:1 and the CPU at 2.5g.

I don't do much gaming, except for a bit of Diablo here and there (which hardly strains the system these days). I do a fair bit of video encoding, I know will benefit from the better memory, so eventually I would probably get the faster memory (and maybe more of it). But I was mainly interested in any possible improvements in folding.

I highly doubt RAM speed has much of anything to do with folding speed... like you said CPU speed is king with F@H. Plus the A64 has the integrated memory controller.. further reducing any speed penalty from RAM

 
With my A64 2800+ I was keeping the cpu at 2.3ghz and playine with having the memory at 200mhz or 228 mhz and there is some difference. The difference changes for each protein because depending on the protein it'll use the memory to varying amounts. I wouldn't say that you'd want to buy faster memory just for folding, but if the increase to 200+ mhz would help your encoding and shave time off that and you can justify the cost then it might make sense.

If you memory can run at 200mhz with a lower cas latency try this for kicks. Start a protein up and let it get through 10-15 frames. Shutdown. Adjust your mem so it's stable at 200 mhz with the reduced cas latency of 3 and maybe change the others also to 4 and then start it up and check out the next 10 or 15 frames and see if it's slower or faster.

hey - thanks for the reply. If I get time this weekend, I might try the experiment you suggested. I was pretty much set on picking up the better memory eventually anyway, since I know it would help with some other things I do, not to mention just knowing that I'm not running as fast as I could just doesn't sit right with me.
