Worth waiting for Maxwell

I have a GTX 670. It works fine with my Dell 2407WFP, but I'd like to get a little more performance with BF4. Just curious what my best options are? I'm willing to wait a few months to get a new video card, and I know Maxwell should be cool but powerful also.

Maxwell is the King!

The problem is, from latest speculations, Nvidia wants to launch Maxwell on 20nm, but TSMC is holding it back, so they're even considering launching it in Q1 2015.

Your best option is to find a used GTX 670 and run SLi assuming your current setup supports it.
Otherwise you'll need to spend $500+ on a 290/780 (or better) for minimal gains.

670-780 is a huge leap, granted not so much at 1920x1200.

OP buy a 290 and just be done with it....

just today upgraded from a gtx 670 ftw to a gtx780 ti. BIG difference, though i'm at 1440p.

will have the card for sale soon if you decide you wanna run sli

Meh, it depends on the game. Skyrim? Sure, no difference at all between a 670 or 780 at 1920x1200.

Something a BIT more modern? Well, you can still find plenty of examples of things that show a difference between them...

Most people though at that resolution are only at 60Hz as well,.

I know my 660Ti at 1215/7000 was getting its ass kicked trying to run 1440p@96Hz, the 290 is lol fast.

I'd say wait for Maxwell. Even if you get a 780 for 25% more performance, you're still dealing with Kepler i.e. the same general TDP and thermal envelope. In any case, you're not going to see a hugely noticeable change at 1080p if you go to a 780.

That is not true at all for demanding games. I had an oced 670 and now having an oced 780 it was up to a 45% increase with around a 30-35% increase overall depending on the settings.

I went from 760 to 760 SLI to 780 and I'm happier with 780. Even running my whole system at stock clocks to try to keep electric bill down my gaming experience has never been smoother or more enjoyable. I'll be happy with 780 for another year and jump on a Maxwell 800 whatever they call it when it's finally released. Till then I would recommend 780 they overclock really well giving the 780 ti stock a very close run.

From what we've seen from the Maxwell architecture already (750/750 Ti) and with 20nm incoming, I'd say if we knew 20nm was coming soon it would be worth the wait. But based off absolutely NO talk regarding Maxwell at GTC it leads everyone to assume Maxwell is not coming for the next 6-9 months. It would be worth waiting for 20nm Maxwell if it was right around the corner, but as far as we know it isn't.

Go for a 780 or 780 Ti if you can afford it (if not you can OC the 780 to really high levels anyways).

Expect nothing new from Nvidia at this point, and AMD has yet to really kick off its R200 Series with all the manufacturing issues they've been having and price inflations. So don't expect them to pick up the slack anytime this year.

I had a couple of 5870's in Xfire starting in 2010. In December I finally upgraded to a 290. During thattime I played all the Crysis games and Farcry3. I wanted a single card that could beat the Xfire setup I had. It was not a question of money because during that time I went from (3)1920 *1200 monitors to (3)2560 * 1440 monitors. I almost considered a trifire setup. I play stealthy and NOT run & gun so framerate requirements are a bit different for me. I think that is what you need to consider also. HOW DO YOU PLAY YOUR GAMES? IMHO, how you play dictates the framerates you need, which will in-turn dictate card requirements.

I love my 290's I also have a 750Ti and I will be getting a Maxwell highend card when they come out on 20nm. You can probably wait, if you do the reward will be greater. If you are having your butt kicked then there is plenty of advice of what to get. If not and you are just itching to get a new card......WAIT.

Outdated information. I don't think anyone pays $500 for 290 nowadays.

Dunno about you, but the cheapest one there is $459. That's pretty close to $500. If you buy from Amazon and you're taxed, then it's just about on the money.

In regard to the OP's question, I'm guessing you're the same HTWingNut from NotebookReviews. As evidenced by the laptop Maxwell, it's definitely a significant performance jump with a reduction in power to boot. I'd wait.

I wouldn't wait for 6-9 months, if it's just around the corner, say 1-2 months away then the wait is worth it. If you're gaming on 1200p, GTX 780 or R9 290 is the way to go depends on your taste. R9 290 seems to be a tad cheaper though.

Anyone who says that 670 to 780 is not a huge jump at 1080p is just stupid. I saw performance gains in the order of 40-50% with my card overclocked.

what quality setting are you running bf4? because to tell you the truth the differences arent that great.

125% resolution scale. 8xAA and everything maxed out in game. I need 2 cards to maintain solid 140+ fps in game.

Last year everyone thought Nvidia would release 780's in the fall in order to make the Titan more appealing...reference 880's will be out in June.

A bit too soon with the Titan Z on the horizon, and the GTX 790 (if you still believe).
Has Nvidia ever launched two products across generations that close together?

Gotta be 5-6 months, minimum. That's ignoring all the other problems we've been hearing recently. May not be released until Q1 2015 now.

Don't know where you are pulling that from but there is zero chance of that happening.

I would agree with the idea of purchasing a second 670 for sli, and then purchasing Maxwell. First, you are not looking at 5-6 months, unless you are planning on paying over MSRP for the initial launch, which is bound to have limited stock. At that point you could sell the 670s on Hardforum, and probably cover 50% of the cost of the Haswell card. That is only if you want to do something about your BF4 experience right now, otherwise you play the waiting game, and your choice is do I wait or jump. IMO SLI is the happy medium you are looking for ATM.

I plan on waiting. I'm getting a 270X in the mail soon to hold me off until they release the new line.

I wonder if they are planning on a GTX 850 Ti Boost, for a near term (summer 2014) release and saving the 860, 870, and 880 for a later (2015) release.

I would say there is next to no chance in hell they'd drop one 800 Series part and wait 3-6 months before releasing another, especially if the first one they drop is a low-end part. The high-end part is what grabs peoples attention, then people can kind of do the math in-between waiting for the other parts that will soon follow.

This^ besides turning settings down on my 27" looks better than running Ultra on my 24.

I think you are maybe investing in the wrong thing.

Exactly. Minimal.
Supersampling and msaa only go so far.

Then again I have pretty low standards with 1440p high @60.

Fudzilla just posted today that 20nm Maxwell should be arriving in late 2014..

http://fudzilla.com/home/item/34451-nvidia-20nm-maxwell-comes-in-late-2014

No idea what their source is, but they're usually right at least 50% of the time :D
Anyone with even a bit of knowledge about the GPU world could make that guess. High-end 28nm is used up, we're hitting limits in die space/power/heat/everything. Nvidia wouldn't spin a high-end Maxwell unless something catastrophic happened to 20nm development, of which I haven't heard anything.

That said, it's a shit time to buy GPU's, you should have bought 6 months ago or should wait until 20 nm. Right now you're overpaying for mediocre performance returns. The GTX 780 is a rip off for $500, if you can score a 290 for $300, that's the way to go.

Price have dropped significantly just in the last few days for high-end amd gpus. Your best bet is to act quickly and pick up a 290 for around $300 as the above poster said or get the 290x (like I did) for around $380. You can likely get around $200 for your 670 still (but I assume market will go down on these once prices even out.)

Just paying $100 net to get similar performace to 670 sli is a great move for you not to mention the jump up to 4gb ram. If you want to totally flex your e-peen you could opt for the 290x for a bit more.

I'm holding off for Maxwell. There's nothing that really taxes my 670 right now anyway at 1080. (I'm currently playing Southpark Stick of Truth and Lego Hobbit) LOL!

290's hitting $300 is pretty great news. Hard wait for Maxwell!

Im waiting for maxwell too, but let's hope this rumor is not becoming reality, like GTX 680 again and endless milking... it's in german, but you can figure out "leaked" specs from the chart

Ouch.. think my Google translator is broken

From the original Czech source, it seems the GTX 880 (GM204) will outperform the 780Ti with a TDP of either 170 or 230W, include 1x ARM core, use only a single 6-pin, and will be available either this summer or next spring??

Whatever the reality of 2nd-gen Maxwell is, it's probably in Nvidia's best interest for us all to continue believing that its launch is still far off, even if it's just around the corner (or another year out). Sure, you could buy a 780 today, or wait and buy an 880 later.. but, you know damn well what they really want is for you to end up buying both ;)

I usually wait two generations of cards or two years before upgrading. My 560ti is showing its age and I will upgrade at the end of the year with either a 700 series or whatever is out at the time.
