worth upgrading?

I have been considering upgrading my cpu and motherboard and was wondering if you guys think this would be a worthwile upgrade at this point. Here is my current system:

P4 2.4B (no HT)
Gigabyte 8SQ800
2x512 Geil Ultra DDR400
Radeon 9800 Pro
Soundblaster Audigy
80GB Maxtor 7200rpm 8mb cache

I have been upgrading the parts in this system over time (most recently the geil ram) and was thinking this might be a good time to upgrade the cpu and motherboard. What I was thinking was an AMD 64 3200+ (939) and an MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum.

Would this be a worthwhile upgrade at this point? The things this machine is used for is gaming (HL2 and other current games), programming, working with 3d tools (such as hammer for modding hl2), among other things.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated!
 
If I were you, I would go buy a new P4 to through in your rig. Some nice Socket 478 processors are still for sale at newegg.com.

I recommend getting the 3.0GHZ c from them. Not familiar with your motherboard, and I am to lazy to google. :) But I assume it is a Socket 478 board with support for HT and 800mhz FSB.

You need to look at price/performance. I am not ready to get rid of my P4 just yet. :)

However, I personally feel the P4 Prescotts and the whole LGA775 socket is a big, extremely hot, steaming pile of shit.
 
you'll definitly notice the difference in gaming. general tasking performance will improve too.
i agree with warmonkey though, unless you want to make a second system to have around. the parts you have picked out are exactly the ones i recommend to people asking what to buy, so you've definitly done your homework on this already. :D

Dont do it. Your proc is fine for gaming. Save your money and get the next iteration of procs coming out from either AMD or Intel...of course you will have to get a new mobo...and a new vid card by that time would be nice.
