I'm torn...
I've currently got an HTPC with an AMD A10-5700, ASRock FM2A85X-ITX, 8GB of Samsung magic RAM, Silverstone ST30SF, Samsung 830 120GB SSD. It's a pretty peppy system already, and will play a lot of games without issue. This HTPC pulls mostly XBMC duty, although it sometimes also pulls Steam light gaming duty. Most of the games I play run fine off the A10-5700 IGP, but occasionally I'll find more demanding games will stutter occasionally.
Now I also have a 2nd HTPC upstairs that my wife uses while working out, but it's a dog. AMD Athlon X2 250, an AM2 MSI mobo with onboard graphics, 2GB of DDR2 RAM, mechanical HDD...it's SLOW and it's been crashing lately, which I think is due to a stick of memory going bad. The short of it - I really want to upgrade this machine in particular.
Now I already have a spare FM2 mobo, so the logical thing to do is just to buy a cheap APU and some memory to keep that HTPC up to date. At the same time, I would LOVE to upgrade the primary HTPC and move those components to the 2nd HTPC.
Now that the A10-7800 is out, I'm struggling over whether to invest the money into that and an ASRock FM2+A88X-ITX. The adjustable TDP would REALLY help keep heat down in my system, due to the fact that it's shoved in an enclosed wooden cabinet down next to the TV. It should also negate the need for a dedicated GPU, at least for a year or two more. And it would also be an easy way to upgrade my 2nd HTPC.
Should I pull the trigger?
