worth upgrading 3.0c to 3.4e?

I'm just wondering if it's worth upgrading my 3.0c Northwood (478 w/512 MB cache) to a 3.4c Prescott with a 1MB cache? I would sell the Northwood, so it'll end up maybe $150 total.

Will I run into heat trouble with the Prescott. I have the Zalman 7000A-CU. How much do these overclock? With my current cpu and can get 3.5 (from 3.0) stable. Should I be able to get to 3.8 or 3.9 on air?

heat trouble...no. but it's not worth it....the performance gain will be minimal (this is only a 13 percent boost in clock speed....that should actually be a quite easy OC)
 
just oc your cpu .... you would waste you money if you upgraded
 
Agreed. I run my 2.8 at 3.6 daily on air (SP-94) and I'd expect to be able to get just as good an OC with a 3.0c. I do have a 3.0E and I can run it at 3.7 stable, but it is still slower than my 2.8c @ 3.6 in benchmarks, so you should save your $$$.

Better yet, since you do have a few extra bucks to spend, why not explore that 3.0c? I can run my 2.8c at 3.7 stable with 1.75 vcore, but I don't want it to die, so I back it down to 1.65. These northwoods seem to love voltage and respond accordingly and from what I've seen here, most are rather conservative with their vcore settings.

That's because NW's start to die at 1.8v. Otherwise, they are superb chips. I think you should just OC the piss out of your 3.0c.
 
I went from a 3.0c to a 3.4E because of intel retail edge. I used to run my 3.0 at 3.4 on air (it would do 4 on phase change). My prescott was too hot to run on air. On water it does 3.8 with stock volts. 4.0 with the volts turned up, but it heats up my room too much. :p Never run the prescott on phase change, at least not yet.
 
How does one notice a CPU heating up a room, unless one lives in an igloo?

My CPU heats my room quite nicely when I overvolt the hell out of it.
Though, that's because I generally have poor ventilation in here to stay quiet. Lately I've opened a window or two and I don't notice heating anymore.

I live in an upstairs apartment, which tends to get hot anyway, but even in the winter, leaving my prescott on for a couple of hours overclocked and overvolted would heat the entire room.

I doubt you would really notice a difference.. I mean taking into consideration how much heat the PSU, vid card, harddrive, overall motherboard and other devices including the monitor puts out I doubt going from a 3.0c to a 3.4e is going to heat your entire room up noticably.
 
Does anybody know where to find a 3.4 Northwood? I was pretty sure they made them at one time...

Sigh... well, it's my apartment, and yes, my 550 at 4.0 GHz with 1.55 v does noticably heat up my apartment more than the 3.0C at 3.4. As you ramp up the voltage to the core temps skyrocket. For example, the 3.4 at stock idles about 39c on my water cooling system and loads about 45-50c. At 4 Ghz at 1.55v it idles at 45c and loads at close to 60c.
 
my 2.4C at 3.4-3.6Ghz heats up the corner of the room a little bit. (plus OC'd 6800GT in there too)

I can feel the warmer air down by my legs.

and thats in a HUGE den. I can only imagine if I was in a small bedroom, dorm or apt. I bet it would make you sweat while gaming.
 
Chris would you mind posting what voltage your running and which if any, mods have you done to your Ic7 to get to 3.4-3.6 as you stated. I'm curious :)
 
Man don't waste your money upgrading a 3.0ghz northwood is good enough, my friend got a 2.4ghz northwood and still it runs like a beast and he game hardcore with his 2.4ghz.
