Worth to wait for the new Nehalem processor?

I am buying a whole new set of system. I just saw the news that Intel is launching the new type of processor with brand new socket. Is it worth to wait for it? When is it going to be really selling? Which is the one going to match the Core 2 Quad right now? Or they will just release the starter level of processor?

Thanks.

So, as some others have said: Most likely they will release the EE first, probably $1000 and such. Eventually they will release other flavors and pricings. That may take a year or more before you start to see the Bang for Buck that the current 8400/8500, Q6600's, E2xxx/4xxx/7xxx hold. So, buy something that is adequate, but not expensive and just plan on waiting 1-2 years before upgrading to Nehalem.

Oh, I see. You answered my question. I do know that many times, it really takes a while for the whole series of processor to be stable on the market. Just like the Core 2 series, I would say it's pretty stable right now. Because the price, the chipset support. The EE you are saying stands for?

Extreme Edition

I would wait, socket 775 is a old socket and its about to die so you wont have a good upgrade path if you go with core2. Socket 1366 on the other hand will be a fresh socket with a long life ahead of it and a lot more performance.

I wouldn't the nehalm will be paper launched in December and you might see it in January for $500+, buy a midrange quad core system and wait out the nehalm storm. With no competition from AMD, intel is going to rape (woops i mean reap) the market.

But there is always a WAIT there. Even I wait til December, I bet Intel will come up with something else in Q1 2009. And there is another waiting again. There is always something you could WAIT. And also it depends on how long the waiting period, like this time, there is a half year waiting period. That would not worth to wait especially for me using a really old PC. I am using a single core processor 4 years ago. It has been really painful using this PC.

Just buy an e8400 and overclock the shit out of it. I got one on ebay for $130 after cashback. You could get a mobo that would bring it over 4ghz for $100. Add in 4gb of ddr2 800 ram and that puts you at $300 for the build.

Then just hold it until nehalem/ddr3 prices are reasonable. In a year, maybe a year and a half, you can still sell that stuff for $150-$200 so it's not like you lose lot of money...you'd waste a lot more paying inflated prices for nehalem/ddr3 because you were in a hurry to upgrade.

not a chance of that happening mate. what are the odds of this new socket being ditched before 2009 ends. doubtful. VERY doubful. cpu's do NOT increase in terms of technology like gpu does. people need to realize that . look at the core 2 and quad core cpu's they have been out for 2-3 years now and the refresh penthyns are only 10% faster and just recently came out.

remember that intel has 2 sockets coming out next year. the budget socket, socket 1160 (?) will be for the cheap cpus, which in all likelihood will have locked fsb (no overclocking). so if you want to continue with your hobby (with nehalem), count on cpus over $500, $300 and up motherboards, and triple channel ddr3 , ie this makes your early purchase of dual channel ddr3 worthless. so for now, you can overclock a quad with 4gb ram for around $400, count on triple that 1 year from now.

That's overstating it a bit. Intel's own roadmap, it shows a $316 Bloomfield at launch. That may well trickle down even further too, especially by Q3 '09 (a year from now), when I wouldn't doubt it to go down to (or a lower-clocked Bloomfield to be introduced at) $266. DDR3 has gone down a lot since last year, and you can bet it will go down a lot by next year too. The only really iffy thing is motherboards. X58 will almost certainly have >$200 motherboards, the real question is will there be a P55 that will also use a Bloomfield socket or not, and whether Intel will license QuickPath to anybody else to make other chipsets for it. That we will have to see. Still, that's at most $100 more for the motherboard, and RAM that's reasonable but not as absurdly cheap as DDR2.

I'd guess this time next year, worst-case scenario: a $250 motherboard (for X58; assuming no Bloomfield P55), a $266 Bloomfield chip (Intel has to compete against itself even if no AMD; eventually everybody who is willing to buy Bloomfield at $316 and above will have it; market saturation), and $150 for 3 GB DDR3-1333 RAM (assuming prices don't go down at all from where they are today). That's $667, little more than half of the $1200 you were predicting. More expensive than today to be sure, but not by that absurd of an amount, and that's worst-case scenario pricing. Of course, that's a year from now; prices at launch will be astronomically higher, especially with retailer price-gouging if Intel can't (or won't) ramp up quantities of CPU's or chipsets fast enough.

I've had the op to experience Nahalem, and its nothing short of outstanding. Its everything its cracked up to be, unfortunately I no longer work for the OEM manufacture anymore.

I'm jumping on it as soon as its available.

I had heard there was going to be 3 bloomfield parts @ launch.

Supposedly:

2.66 @ $300 ish?

2.93 @ 500-599 ish?

3.23 @ 999 ish?

I remember reading that on a few sites as per intel from the taiwan computer show a few weeks ago.

If true, and it sounds reasonable to me, that's not bad at all for brand new tech on a new socket with the performance we have seen so far in early benches.

I'm in for that 2.93ghz part.

Locked FSB?

What the fuck? Where did that intel (no pun) come from?

the lower priced chips, that will be on socket 1160 will have locked fsb and locked multis. while this is not 100%, it sure does look like that is what is going to happen. and if intel likes the way that works out you can expect all fsb/multis to be locked except for the ee cpus.

IMO it depends on what you've got currently. I can easily hold out for Nehalem on my current system, but if I had a sinlge core cpu or a weaker dual core on a board that didn't support higher end duals or quads, then I wouldn't wait.

I sold off my desktop computer early this year, knowing 15 months ago when I built it that I wasnt going to build anything else until nehalem hit. I did spring for a new laptop with a penryn, and its quite nice, but 2.5Ghz penryn isnt quite the same as a 3ghz+ yorkfield. Shrug.

Ill be getting a 2.66Ghz bloomfield and bumping the QPI speed up a bit I suppose.

15 year old PC? Where did you sell it, at an antique auction? :D

OP, If I had a 4 year old painfully slow pc, I would just buy some thing new right now. I generally upgrade every 1.5 to 2 years on the mobo/cpu/ram. 9 months to a year on gpu upgrades. I buy the best I can afford when I am ready to build. I rarely wait on new stuff to come out unless it is coming out within a month or two of when I am ready to build. That is the way that works best for me.

But if you are going to be stuck with this new build for 4 years, you might want to consider waiting for Nehalem. 4 years is a long time in PC years.

Oops. Was gonna say 1 year and then decided 15 months. :p

And here I thought you said it on purpose to make fun of those who were proclaiming that Nehalem would work miracles and make julienne fries at the same time. ;) Hope your're happy with your new laptop. :)

Aside from dumping a can of mountain dew on it (fixed under accidental coverage and was back in 3 days) its been great. The click button is sticky now, but I dont use it anyway. Might send it back in for that after the nehalem build.
