Worth pulling the trigger on a system like THIS?

I know its a tad late in the game because the newer 65nm flavor processors and such are just around the corner, but as a result, prices could drop, and it makes good lee-way for components THIS powerful:

- Intel Pentium EE 840 Smithfield 800MHz FSB 1MB x 2 LGA 775 EM64T Dual core + HT - $1,010.00
- BFG Tech BFGR78512GTXOC 7800GTX 512MB @ 580/1750 Stock - $749.00 (Possibly x2)
- ASUS P5WD2-E Premium Socket T (LGA 775) Intel 975X - $269.00
- Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 800 - $450
- Maxtor QuickView 6L100M0 100GB 7200 RPM Serial ATA150 - $58.50
- ENERMAX Liberty ELT620AWT ATX12V 620W - $174.99
- Acer AL2416Wd Silver 24" 6ms gray-to-gray Wide Screen 1920x1200 - $929.99

After that I need a good WC to cool down the CPU and GPU, so suggestions could be made there. Now, I have a few months before I possibly pull the trigger on this beast, and am debating if its worth a good $1000 (Meaning the CPU). I am strictly AMD-Free so please dont suggest me against non-intel brands. Suggestions and comments welcome :D

...is it me or are some people in this room totally blind to NO-AMD Signs?

Uhh where is this sign you speak of? LoL.

Seriously, 1k for that CPU. Might as well just get a FX-60.

If I'm not mistaken the Intel Pressler 930 ($357) and 940 ($460) are both available on newegg for under $1000 and should work nicely with the mobo you selected. From what I gather water cooling should not be needed since the 65nm proc runs much cooler than the prescott (90nm) However a good swiftech W/C kit is always a nice addition. I would also suggest the Maxtor Dianomdmax 10 over the Quickview, which is intended for mce machines and would also allow you to take advantage of the sata II specs on the mobo. and as a personal choice I prefer Mushkin memory over ocz....all in all a nice rig, let us know how it goes when you build. and if I'm not mistaken again the P5WD-E is a 975 chipset ?

Pressler 920 over any 8x0. With the money you save you could probably squeeze in another 7800 GTX. The 920 will clock higher with less voltage than any Smithfield.

Reason being is that, if im going to dump a lot of money into it, I want to make it worth it. Ill be looking at the Pressler when it comes out, thanks. ATi? No TY.

Is 100gb enough for you? I know they make QuickView drives up to 500gb, I'd need something at least 200gb.

Yes 100 GB is enough for me which is why I chose it. Sure, I can get a bigger drive but I just dont need it at this point and time.

Are you lost....:)

I would not get any 800 series, they run too hot and don't overclock very well..... get ANY one of the 900 series.

If you're going to spend $1000 on a CPU... you should get the 955xe.

Personally, I'd get a 920 or 930 and overclock it. Spend the extra money on a high end air heatsink or prebuilt watercooling kit (or even vapochill)!

And if the build is still a few months away you'll probably be able to get a 7900GTX (early march?)

What I would do:
Intel D 920
Asus 975 (you picked already)
2Gb namebrand (OCZ, Corsair, etc) DDR2 667 (much cheaper)
Koolance water cooled case
7900GTX
WD 150Gb Raptor
+ GPU & CPU blocks not included
etc...

Agreed, If your going to drop that much money on a CPU you should get one of the 900 series.

at newegg

CPU INTEL|PENTIUM D 920 LGA775 4M R $269.00

CASE CM | RC-540-SKR1 SIL 380W RT $69.00

DVD BURNER LITEON|SHW-160P6S BK R $41.99

MEM 512Mx2|CORSR TWIN2X1024-5400C4 $102.90

MB ASUS P5LD2-VM 945G 775 $106.00

$ 607 shipped to my door

I just went with this to replace my shuttle, I am adding my 2X 300 GB Seagetes and my dual tuner and copy of MCE 2005. I'll add a video card later and some more HD and another gig of ram when I get some more cash. I will probably overclock it alittle to 930 or 940 spec's

it's my new Tivo and encoding machine

^ Wow, that sounds pretty good. Im definetly checking those parts out.

Update: O-M-G! The Pentium D 920 runs super cool! This is definetly a winner :D

$260+ for a motherboard...ouch

How much was the i875 when it first came out?

I don't know, I got the Asus board that was the first i865 board to enable i875's PAT. That was $120 :D

wait for 955, personally I would like the 955/840 EE better than the FX 60 cause it can emulate 4 CPU's

That's a pretty weak reason imo, it doesn't really add much performance if any. That is an e-penis factor. I like intel but even I wouldn't take an FX60 over a 955/840 EE.

hmmmm? I NEED MORE. I am not happy with 2 any more, I want 4 CPU's 4 Graphics cards 4 GB of ram for EACH CPU and at least 4 TB of HD.
Dual is old, get with the times 4 CPU's :D

But in all seriousness, I am a multitasker, you can kill me the day I play games for more than 30 min.

lol yea I considered the fact that this cpu supports HT. For the bang/buck ratio though, its probably not worth it, especially considering that the 920 has 4MB total L2, which is astonishing in itself.

Correct, benchmarks show that the extra vitrual cores don't help more. Physical cores is where it's at.

I agree with the guys who said 9xx > 8xx. My dad got an 8xx and is dissapointed with the performance. He wishes he had kept his 3.2E instead of going 2.8 dual-core. Definetely get a 9xx, if not for the sake of 65nm overclocking goodness. Cheaper too (my suggestion: go for the 930).

Don't buy the EE model . You said it will be awhile before you pull the trigger. The 65 none EE will be out soon get one of those. or get the 955 but don't get the one you posted about.

Conroe will probably rock if its released at 3.33Ghz (then + overclocking?)

So can you imagine maybe a 4Ghz (overclocked from 3.33Ghz) dual core Pentium M with better FPU, b/c thats basically what we'll have if things pan out right!!!

Wait for a 9XX seris running cooler is defentally worth the wait i would save a couple hundred and just get the 950. I think I read at least for the 840 that the EE is slower than the non EE because programs dont know how to use HT and my 3.4 550 is faster in games with out it.

And just out of Curiosity what do you have against AMD I was like you then made the switch and couldnt be happier but it all in what you want not what other people think you want

I dont have anything against AMD, I just have more trust in intel processors, regardless of what other people can comment on them. I loved my 3.0C Prescott when I had it, pretty good temps for me, overclocked 3.8 and beyond on higher-end cooling (cold air). It got me much better benchmarks than my A64 3000+ Venice, and overclocks much better. I got 20,000 more in Aquamark 3 with my P4, so thats basically what I have against my AMD...Never picking AMD again. Intels also support DDR2 667 and higher, which is INCREDIBLY advantageous, so I dont see a reason to pick some crappy AMD. I dont care what FX is, could be FX-230597207 for all I care, Intel FTW! :D

I personally just ordered the gigabyte 975 board and a 930 cpu, can't wait for them to get here. It was a little over 600 all total, eWiz has the best prices on the 975 boards. Last I checked, Dell has 512 GTXs available if you really want to buy one and are having problems finding them.

Ehh, im ok with the onboard Intel GMA950 that comes with the Shuttle im getting, and the 945G Chipset. Getting a 920, should suit me well.

1337 Intel lineup soon to come: SD31-P1-BK-V1 Intel LGA775 945G, Pentium D 920 Presler 65nm, pqi TURBO 2GB (1x2) DDR2 667 Dual Channel, ENVISION EN-2028 Black 20" 12ms, Samsung Black IDE CD-RW, Seagate 120GB Sata150.

Can't call that "1337" with only integrated graphics.

Its nice & all, but no graphics card = teh suk

Intel GMA950 is pretty good. I just dont want to put down the dough on t3h 1337 gfx card yet, I dont game enough.

That can always be added. I will be using my intergrated graphics too. at least until the next gens come out. I will be playing more on my 360 than PC anyways. dam , thursday cannot come fast enought

Integrated graphics are just fine for email/internet/office. If he's not gaming then why spend the extra dough?
