My current sound setup is:
SB Live 5.1 X-Gamer
Labtec Pulse 424 2.1 speakers (here)

I'm thinking of upgrading to:
SB Audigy 2 ZS ($115 CAD)
Altec Lansing MX-5021 2.1 speakers (mostly for music, I'm really not interested in anything more than a 2.1 setup) ($195 CAD)

Think I'll hear enough of a difference to warrant the price?
 
the audigy 2 is good, but, get either the Klipsch Promedia 2.1's or the Z 2200's from Logitech. Much more powerful!
 
Well apparently the Altecs produce clearer sound than the Logitechs, and power really doesn't concern me. Frankly, I think my current speakers have enough power. My main problem with them is that the sound is just washed out, not crisp. The Klipsch are in a different price range.

Edit: I went overboard on the power thing. Power is important, but my point is I'm not really looking for the highest loudness-to-price ratio :) . I usually don't listen to music loud.
 
you'll notice a big difference with the sound card. the audigy 2zs sounds 10x better than the live ever did.
 
Thats a great buy. I have the same combo as you. And I went from a simular setup. Its like night and day. B/C of the combo I really hate to listen to the radio B/C of the low quailty. :p Don't let the watts fool you, with the bass up, these can pack a huge punch, and get very loud very easy. The only thing if you hardly game, take look at this card. Its great for music, and it rivals a revo 7.1 in 2.1. same dacs, but in 7.1 its not as good.

The sound card will really help, but you say the Klipsch are out of your price range? The 2.1's are like $180 USD. I would say they are worth it, too.
 
the klipsch 2.1 are $149 with free shipping at amazon.com. I have them, and they rock.

From TheEAR's speaker comparison, the Altec MX5021's sats are just as good as even the Ultra sats (and better in some respects), and while the sub uses only a 6.5" woofer it seems to hold it's own all the way down to 31.5 Hz.

He's also in Canada, Klipsch is way overpriced over here (at least for the multimedia speakers). The Klipsch Ultra's sell for $650 whereas the Gigaworks S700 can be found for $450. The Promedia's 2.1 go for around $300 here too, not worth $100 difference for no quality improvements.
 
I don't get when people say they can't buy things in other countries at the same price...if you order from a website, like newegg, and have it shipped (this might be a little extra), wouldn't the price still be the same?

And in terms of 2.1 systems, I have yet to hear a subwoofer that competes with the Klipsch.
 
Specifically, Newegg doesn't ship to Canada. Generally, there are often tariffs involved in shipping international goods that make the effective price much higher.

Is Telex availible in Canada? They used to have a pretty widely availible 2.1 set that was reputed to be good.

Yeah, shipping cross-country is a big hassle. Expensive, and even more so if it ends up defective and you have to send it back or something.

From what I've read the Altecs are pretty much on par with the Klipsch. After searching a bit, I found the 2.1 Promedias for $278 CAD = $204 USD. Too much to spend on speakers!
 
Wow. How do you canadians handle it, getting ripped off on stuff all the time?

Shit I'd be pretty pissed if people living a few hours or less away were paying a good 25% less on computer stuff...
