Currently gaming at 1680x1050 with an 8800GT SC. Some games are getting a tad slow with high settings and AA and AF. Was wondering if I would get a 4850 if my settings would be able to go up a bit not get so much choppy frame rates at current games. I do like to use some AA and AF....Fry's has the 4850 on sale for 169.99 now...

Its VisionTek, it must be new packing or something, I had the box in my hand..I tried the 4870, was way to hot to loud and alot of my games started crashing and my system would reboot. I was hoping for something that was 1 slot and 1 power connector. I would like something that is faster than the GT, but not 10 times as fast. Something that will let me put more eye candy a bit and not make my games run choppy.
Honestly, I do not know how the heat had anything to do with your system. All the heat on a 4870 is shot right out the back of the system. If anything I would think you would have more problems with a 4850 because the hot air from the card is blown into your case...
I think your system crashed for other reasons beside the heat, possibly due to your PSU (at least that would be my first guess).
As for the fan, the speed can be changed.

I had an SLI 8800GT setup and a 8800 Ultra with this Psu so I'm sure its good. When I had the 4870 my idle temps on that were 85 load well over 100. I did see a boast from the 4870 for sure just not alot. I'm looking for a card that will give me a boast over my GT, but still keep the heat and noise and power draw to about the same levels as the GT, I was thinking that the 4850 is that card. I only game at 1680x1050. Its just some of my new games, like stalker at getting a bit choppy in places with the GT and I was hoping that the 4850 would iron out those few choppy places I was getting..
What did you have your fan set at? Mine idles at 55 and tops out at 70 at most when under load. I've read that the 4850 gets equally as hot. I just think if you are worried about heat, and given the stock cooling solutions, a 4870 would be much better than a 4850.
I had the fan speed set to 40% and then the temps were ok. But it sounded like a jet engine. I guess what I'm saying is, I would like a card that would give me a slight boost from what I have now, but still keep the single slot single power connection type card..
