Worth it to wait for IB?

I won't even be getting the money for a new system until late January, and I'm under no deadline to build a new one.... Talk me into waiting the extra couple months for Ivy Bridge instead of a Sandy. ;)

Would it be [H] of me to use Tax refunds for IB? I would really like to know if switching from a 965be at 4ghz to an IB similar to the 2500k or something would make my 6970 scream. . been on this sempron for far too long :(
 
I got some good deals on S1155 Z68 and i5-2500k just recently and am building new RIG. My Z68 is ready for IB S1155. When i5-3570k comes out I'm selling my 2500k and buying 3570k. I'm a slow builder. Just enjoying everything about it and by the time I get 3570k my RIG should be totally ready for it.
 
You will get native PCIe 3.0 support (pending certification) with an IB platform, also with chipset based USB 3.0 ports too except the budget B7* chipsets. Idle and load power consumption also go down with IB vs SNB.

The slight downside is that IB is the end of the road for LGA 1155. Haswell gets a new socket.

I'm still happy with an i7 950 and will probably wait for a higher speed budget IB later next year or Haswell.

Sorry....but no.

If you can afford i5-2500K, unless you have a bunch of niche applications that make use of features unique to IB, the reason for waiting is nil.

P67/Z68 IB-ready motherboards are available, and available at decent prices (in the odd case of ASUS, they are starting to become prevalent in the midrange and high-end, but existed at the value/budget end first, while MSI has not so much as *one* P67 or Z68 motherboard that *isn't* ready for IB shipping - from high end to low).

Even absent MC bundle pricing on i5-K, it's still affordable, and IB isn't going to force pricing for Sandy down any.
 
Well at this stage in time, it is better to wait unless you can get a really good deal on SB.
 
Assuming that the Ivy bridge specs on cpu-world are true Intel isn't bumping up the clock speeds on Ivy bridge so I sort of have my doubts that they will overclock much better. I guess that any improvement in performance would have to come from architectural improvements which in the past on an Intel tick have never been that big. I sort of doubt that as long as you get a good price on an 1155 board and i5 2500k that you'll have any regrets once those Ivy bridge reviews hit.

It also depends on what you are upgrading from. If you are currently using an 1156 or 1366 system which is still plenty powerful it might not hurt to wait but if you're using an AMD or intel 775 setup the improvement is going to be plenty big.
 
I'd wait... Actually, I AM waiting for IB before my next upgrade.Considering this question comes up pretty often, to say that the reason for waiting is "nil" is well... wrong. Clearly people have reasons to wait for IB.

I'm waiting becuase it's a better, faster, newer processor and I can make due with what I've got until it's release. I'm also waiting for Haswell before I make my next laptop purchase.
 
Im gonna say dont wait. We're still talking about 4 maybe 5 months down the road for Ivy Bridge to drop and if youre on this forum then chances are youre not gonna want to sit on old tech that long.

I say go ahead and put together a really good Sandy Bridge build. Get something like an high end Asus Z68 board and 2500K and youll have a bad ass rig with plenty of power and performance. Then in 6 or 7 months, you can get a Ivy Bridge proc and drop in there if the mood hits as theyll be backwards compatible. Because of the backwards compatibility, there isnt much need to wait because its not an "either/or" situation. You can have both! ;)
 
I don't really see the point in waiting for a tick (die shrink). Besides, you can alway buy a Z68 motherboard with PCIe 3.0 and upgrade to Ivy Bridge later if you really want to. If you buy a bundle at Microcenter, you'll easily make a profit.
 
Id wait for ivy bridge to come out and then get a 2500k used for cheap. Sounds like there won't be much of a performance increase just a die shrink with lower power consumption. Might yield higher overclocks though. My 2500k is screaming at 4.5ghz and can hit 4.8ghz no sweat, no point in upping it that high with the extra voltage needed.

I've never seen a new release push down old Intel cpus. Hell, I traded a Q9650 for i7 860 which I then sold after sandy was released for almost $250. Q6600 still goes for over $100, thats a four year old cpu.

If you look around you can find good deals now. I paid $190 for a new 2500k and I don't live near a microcenter. You can get a really good asrock board for a really good price and DDR3 is cheap.
 
The "wait for the new stuff so the old stuff gets cheaper" theory doesn't really pan out, unless you're buying used. More often then not, the new stuff simply gets introduced at a higher price point until the older parts get discontinued and have their inventory depleted, then the price drops on whatever the current gen is. In the event the old stuff does get reduced, it's typically not by very much, certainly not enough to plan your whole purchase on.
 
^ Or, likely what's going to happen, the old stuff will get phased out so quick that supply and demand will keep prices consistent. Meaning, 2500K prices will be the same as equivalent IB. Unless zero demand for SB hits, which is about a nil chance.
 
AMD's CPU prices drop permanently and there's sales, Intels CPU prices almost never drop, but you might find a 10-20 dollar off sale every now and then.

GPU's and mobo's don't drop to much either unless you wait 2 and a half years or something lol.

But there are rare times when a product is released and it is priced way to high and can come down. example Q6600 was above 800.00 when it launched.
 
Yeah I dont see the old 1156 procs dropping in price any. They still run you close to 3 bills. Hell, try to find a Core 2 Quad for under $200! The E4500 is STILL $180!! Thats the same price it was back in 2009! LOL

Ive always thought its best to just buy what you need, when you need it. Seems to always be that no matter how long you wait or how hard you shop, the instant you buy something, something newer, better and cheaper will come out.
 
I'm still pretty much pleased with my PC's performance - its a socket 1366 platform. If I had a Rampage III Extreme and a hex-core, I probably wouldn't even be tempted by anything released thus far. I originally planned to jump to socket 2011 with Sandy Bridge-E, but with Intel's near-insulting pricing and spec, I'm witholding my money. Hopefully, if enough others do the same, then when Ivy Bridge-E comes out, Intel will release a $250-300 part that's exactly the same spec'ed as the Extreme Edition except in clock speed, like they did to make 1366 so popular. Now, you have to pay $700 to get "almost" as good with less cache...hell with that!

If you're waiting until January, keep waiting. When Ivy Bridge comes out, you'll have the choice of the 1155 or 2011 platforms and both will likely be good chips if the 3D gate technology works out properly - cool running and powerful for a low price.

If you wait for whatever is coming out next, when the next thing is out there will be the next thing announced. Sure the next thing will be better but if you buy today you get to actually use and enjoy itt which should be of some value.

Intel doesn't like lowering their prices on chips, so early adopters usually don't regret paying X amount because that X amount rarely changes and certainly never changes drastically. Sometimes it pays off to wait -- as in BD, Pent4 or on the opposite end the first FX or SB -- but that depends on how long you have to wait and just how well the chip performs. Considering this is a die-shrink of an already awesome CPU + better graphical performance and they should be here late Q1-and-early-Q2, then I'd say wait if you don't need the upgrade at this moment.
 
If you need the performance, then get SB now. The leaked IB specs show the same price as SB with a 100 MHz bump in stock frequencies, and a small drop in load power. There's reduced idle power, but since Sandy is already so frugal, you won't notice that on the desktop.

Leaked benchmarks show a %7 performance gain per-clock. And even if you don't believe the leaked benches, Intel only implied up-to %15 per-clock performance improvement. There may be more overclock headroom, but even that is not a guarantee. This is NOT going to be a major performance increase, so I wouldn't wait on it for better performance.

The only reason you could really justify waiting is if you needed PCIe 3.0, but most of the forum goers here don't need it (or already went with 1366 or 2011 to satisfy their I/O needs).
 
My general rule of thumb - its not worth waiting for a 'tock', it is worth waiting for a 'tick'. And since Intel is just as likely to switch sockets each release, you end up upgrading more than the cpu anyway, so if your builds last a while, wait for the tick.

I think you mean the opposite. The "tocks" are new microarchitectures (e.g, Nehalem and Sandy Bridge), the "ticks" are die shrinks (Westmere and Ivy Bridge).

But I agree that's it's worth waiting for the new microarchitectures and not for the die shrinks.
 
I just ordered a 2500k because the performance increase is so minimal between it and IB I don't see the reason to wait. And I'm tired of getting low FPS in MWLL at 1080p so it will be a nice jump and won't bottleneck my new video card when Kepler comes out.

i say that would constitute more than just a usual 'tick'
 
Similar performance, same socket, same memory. Sounds like a tick to me.
 
It may be a new type of transistor, but nearly all the engineering effort in Ivy is to try to 1) drastically improve the graphics portion of the chip so it draws pictures as pretty as Llano and 2) to reduce power consumption. Ivy will be a big boon to notebook OEMs who will have major power savings from the CPU and from being able to forgo using a separate GPU. On the desktop front Ivy is Intel's first real shot at taking apart the very low end discreet graphics card market, especially for non-workstation "business" machines that need the computer power of the 3700 but do not want to spend for GPUs.

For gamers, there is very little reason to wait.

It's just an arbitrary notation anyways. Ticks are a new process and tocks are a new microarchitecture. It does emphasize that a new uarch has a lower risk since it's on an existing process.

Our next generation of processors is going to be a little more than just a die strink. With the introduction of tri-gate and improved IGP (Integrated Graphics on Processor) there will be a greater level of improvement with them than normal but I don't know that it is going to be to the level that some people feel it is going to be.
