I currently have a 6870. Would it be worth it for me to get a 7850?

why not look at reviews and see how the 7850 compares? but no IMO its not even worth the trouble as its only 20% faster. it does have way more overclocking headroom though.

I don't know the AMD/ATI cards well, but I would say it depends on the amount of RAM on the card. If they're the same, it probably wouldn't make much difference. If you currently have, say, 1GB and the newer card has 2GB, you would see a difference in certain games. When I went from a 1GB GTX 560 ti to a 2GB GTX 660, I noticed marked improvement in Skyrim.

I upgraded from a 6870 1GB to a 7850 2 GB and noticed a decent improvement, I'm now running it at 1150 on air and it's a huge difference.
