I found a Sony 15" LCD by the curb as I drove by, so I picked it up. It had a monitor cable and it's power brick all with it. It powers up great, but there's just one problem.

The image on the screen is all wacked out, but there is no visible cut or mark on the actual surface of the LCD. What exactly does it look like happened to this monitor? I think it looks as if someoen struck it. Is there any chance that I can repair this with basic knowledge, or will it need a replacement part? If worst comes to worst, I'm sure I can get some cash for it on eBay or something selling it for parts.

that thing is toast. you could try and find a replacement screen for it and put it in ur self. if all else fails.........ebay it.

I have no knowledge of this kind of problem. The first thing I'd try would be a different cable, if it the original can come off that is.

If that doesn't help, try hitting it again :)

If all else fails it would be pretty fun to take something like this apart, which you'd never do on a working one. Or take a hammer to it and post pics of the carnage. :)

And I wonder myself what caused it. Could it be a simple bad computer chip, or blunt force that damaged the screen.

The AGP to digital converter is broken. I sadly had exactly the same problem on my first liquid crystal display. If you look at the organization of the interference it's pretty clear. There are red blue and greenish lines interlaced tightly towards the top of the screen. A merely smashed liquid crystal panel will have pixels that are either stuck on or off near the area of impact.

So the panel is fine, but everything connecting to it is broken. Fixing the electronics would be difficult work, although if you keep a sharp eye you might be able to find another of that same model to get replacement parts. I also vaguely remember people talking about interfacing with liquid crystal panels from laptops, perhaps you could look that up and somehow get the required replacement boards. Good Luck.

As you can buy a screen like this for a negligible amount, and the parts are probably about the same as the new screen.. I'd say it's not worth fixing

I say it's not worth fixing. Just ebay it...LCD's are getting cheap nowdays anyways...
