So i am a college student (aka mostly broke) and also an avid gamer when i can be. My computer now is in my sig and as you can see its very behind the times. I am thinking of building a new computer this summer and had a few ideas. I saw This and am not sure if its in my best interest to not upgrade now. It doesn't bother me if i buy now and am not able to use the AM3 models because of the current motherboards. But i would like the opportunity to upgrade to the "Deneb" build at least. So what I'm getting at is 1. If i buy a 790 FX board now would i be able to use a Deneb processor? 2 Is it a smart idea to even buy a processor now because of the new models dropping in 2K9?

If you are looking to maximize performance for your dollar, I encourage you to go the Intel route. A P35 + cheap C2D will overclock past 3ghz and will be great, with the potential to upgrade to a good quad-core.

If you are set on the AMD route, though, the last I heard AM3 CPUs will be backwards compatible with AM2/AM2+ sockets, but I'm not too optimistic in how well that will work out given how AMD dropped the ball with the AM2+ backwards compatibility...

However, I don't think its in your best interest to wait until 2k9 given how crappy your current system is - I mean really, you are just going to be stuck waiting forever :)

Hmm yea definitely didn't know am3 may be backwards compatable and i really do need a new setup. I kinda a AMD fan boy so i don't wanna go the Intel route and over clocking isn't something that I've really experimented with (obviously lookin at my build now) so im not sure i want to mess with it to much. Which is why amd is also appealing because they have the AOD which seems to be reliable enough that i wont melt my system.

But with that said u think its a good idea to throw money down on a 9500/9600 now or just get a dual and wait for a better quad core to drop?

At the very least wait until the B3 revision of Agena and (dual core) Kuma drop. Should be before the end of June.
