Back in the late 80’s when video gaming was starting its climb towards the mainstream I don’t think any of us took the time to really think about cover art and how bad in some cases it was. 1UP however has spent some time thinking about it and also assembled this rather humorous list of winners from all periods of gaming.

The very first thing you see before buying or renting a game is its cover. Well, you spoiled Internet-having kids probably see a bunch of videos, advertisements, and previews first. Back in my day, right after we killed off the last of the dinosaurs and invented videogames so we'd have something to do in our suddenly boring, dinosaur-free world, all we had to go on were the covers.

haha I remember some of those. So bad they're good. Strider was such an awesome game and bore zero resemblance to its cover art.

Phlanax wasn't that bad of a game. Defender clone, if I recall. But it was cool.

Never did figure out the cover.

Aww man...I swear no one is ever going to forget that Mega Man cover.

Although...some of the covers they included aren't THAT bad. The Street Fighter Alpha cover (while not one of the better SF covers) is far from being a horrible game cover.

I so remember seeing the cover for Shatterhand though...and the 1990's style sun glasses that everyone would wear. lol

Those master system cases struck me as really crappy back in the day. Did Apple design them?:p

My fav: "Irritating Stick" haha

Ditto. I was just about in tears upon seeing this one. Whoever titled it must have been taking ESL classes; perhaps in their native language it came out a lot better.

And perhaps not. :D
