Worse time for gpu shopping? It's the best time to shop for gpu's of all time! Are you kidding. Never before did you have the ability to buy a card that can come within 10-15% (3-5fps) from the top end card that costs $500+ for less than $370 moreover never before have you been able to buy that cards little brother and then flash it to the same performance of its big brother for less than $275. I honestly feel that there has never been a value better than the HD 6870 floating around the sub $200 price point.
I'm a long time nvidia fan. I like their drivers and features (cuda/3d) etc.. but AMD has brought it this gen and the value available for the money has never been better. Nvidia has made some great advancements on their end and the 500 series is far beyond anything that could have been predicted from the 400 series. Shame the prices on them aren't as good compared to the competition. They especially missed the mark on the GTX 560Ti pricing and the GTX 570 only having 1.28GB vs amd offering 2gb per gpu for their top 2 cards. Nvidia should have had 1.5gb per top two options as well.. at least.

So that extra 20% for the GTX580 is going to make all the difference? If you're only using a single monitor, 1.5GB is ample. 1.25GB is pretty much fine too. If you're using multiple displays, you want two cards to run high-end games, and that's an end of it.

Don't worry. Charlie told me that Jen-Hsun Huang, nVidia's CEO, personally reads these forums and has read over this very specific post despite his busy day putting wood screws into things and after reading your post, agrees that the 580 should be lowered to $130.00 as you can upgrade your 5850 you bought for $130.00 to a nvidia GTX 580. He'll get right on it just after he solves the problem of hell freezing over. He figures if he donates 1,000 GTX 480s, that should do the trick.
In all honesty, this is not worst time in gpu shopping 'ever'. Remember when 8800 Ultras used to cost $800.00 a peice? At least we dont have any $800.00 cards out for SINGLE gpus anymore.
