Worse performance with the C2D?

Old Setup:
DFI nF4 SLI Infinity Mobo
AMD Athlon 64 3500+ Venice 2.2GHz

New Setup:
Asus P5N-E Mobo
Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 Conroe 2.13GHz

Same everything else in the setup. Im actually seeing slower load/response times with the C2D than I did with the 3500+ venice. The C2D is not overclocked, which may be apart of my problem, but it shouldnt be this noticeable, should it? I know from all the satisfied people that the C2D isnt all just hype, but how come im seeing less performance than a single core AMD?
 
Media, rendering, loading games, and stuff like that. I have the exact same RAM so im pretty sure its the cpu. I just thought with everything that i heard about the C2D that i would have been blown away.

Up the FSB from 266 to 350, that would get your e6400 running at 2.8ghz. Then see how it compares to your 3500+?
My guess would be that even if you oc'ed your 3500+ as far as it would go, you could not equal your e6400 with a mild oc.
 
Driver issues maybe? I too came from AMD 3500+ and my 6400e pretty much own my old 3500+ in stock speed even.
also how do you have the same ram?
 
I agree it sounds like a driver issue or nasty install.

The chip you have now should smoke your old one. Even at stock speeds there should be no contest, maybe start over. I've seen installs of an OS that some how just didn't go well.

well, not the exact same RAM, with the new mobo I had to buy new RAM, so i bought the same stuff but ddr2 800 instead of ddr 400.

I did not reformat. I changed the mobo, psu, ram, and cpu. I didnt know that anything else but the mobo needed new drivers. Im not doubting anyone, because it seems logical, but I dont see why a reformat would be necessary?

Just to recap, the 3500 doesnt destroy my C2D at all, but for instance, when i have A LOT of songs in my WMP, sometimes there is a second delay when switching songs. (im just using this as a comparison) With the AMD 3500+ there was no delay. Just other little things, apps, load times, ect seem slightly worse with the C2D, but not much.

haha. u have to re-format and start again after a mobo change :p theres your problem! once you have, you will smoke ure amd.

DOH!!! :D i feel way stupid. Up until lately ive never really had the money to buy new stuff so im unaware of what to do when i do change.

I will reformat extremely soon. Curious though, how does reformating change anything? Basically to remove all previous drivers, or is it more than that? thanks so much.
 
yeah its mainly drivers etc. theres a few other things that go on when u install winows i believe...
 
Yea.. whenever you make a major chipset change (AMD to Intel), you should always reformat. I'm sure there are people here that can make it pretty technical, but your biggest issue is the way your kernal is operating. Totally different drivers, operating behavior.

Reformat, take a 2-3 hours for a new install / rest of your programs, and you should see a sig. difference.

ah ok, makes sense. just a question, does my bios change (oc settings) or go back to default, after I reformat my computer?
 
Bios settings will remain unchanged. If your just starting off, leave everything stock, or at its most stable setting. Plug in the CD, and off you go!
 
Weird things happen with windows when you change chipset/cpu vendors and dont reformat. You will see just now nice that cpu is once you do so.
 
So, even if a known OC works, is it still best to revert back to stock settings when reformatting?

To keep it simple just revert the CPU/FSB speed to stock and leave everything else the same.

And just to add, I did not think to ask if you reformatted, lol. No doubt thats your problem.

That's not what a wanted to hear! When i get my computer i was planning on overclocking it and installing benchmarking and stability testing software, then, once it's stable, reformat so i have a clean install for windows and games. Is that a bad idea?
 
well all you do i OC to whatever you want, write down the settings (or transfer to flash drive on asus mobo's) restore to defaults, install windows, then whack in ure OC's :)
