worm SDBOT virus? help please

so, my computer has been restarting itself basically right after the windows XP screen right before it tries to go into windows. I took it to a computer repair place to have it looked at. They said i have this virus the "worm SDbot" and thats what causing the computer to restart. I specifically asked them to make sure it wasnt a hardware issue.

So, basically he said the only way to fix it is to wipe out the entire system and reinstall XP. Now my hard drive is partitioned into 2 parts, i have 5 gig for windows only so that if i reformat or reinstall windows i dont lose everything.

However, the guy at the store told me that i will still lose all my programs , photoshop, office ect. even though they are not on the drive with windows. They also reccomended that i just wipe off everything and start over from scratch.

well, i have alot of pics, and files and programs that i dont wanna lose and i dont wanna erase everything. Some programs i just cant get and pics will all be lost. :(

Any suggestions on what i might be able to do? and do i really have to clear everything? i mean i thought i split my HD into 2 parts so i wouldnt lose everything
 
First, try and remove the virus. That is step one.

If that doesn't work, then try a repair install

If that doesn't work then 1) ghost your C drive to your D drive 2) format your C drive 3) Reinstall windows

The final idea here will require you to reinstall your programs, but you will save all your work.
 
they told me the virus couldnt be removed, but that they did quarentine it.
and that in order to fully remove it eveyrthing had to be wipped out.
 
try going into safe mode and virus scanning there? or right as it starts loading the desktop, if it gets that far, you could try ctrl-alt-del and kill any processes that look suspect.
 
if you have access to another computer that has good protection on it .. take your hdd out and hook up to that comp and run scan on the drive and remove the virus ..and you could also back up your data perhaps as well on other comp ..

then put hdd back in your comp and see if it boots up .. if no , then do a repair install and you should then be back up and running ...

well acctually i do have another computer that has nortons and spy sweeper and such on it. But ive never tried installing a second HD into another computer with one already. is it fairly straight forward? plug and play?

pretty much .. you could just unplug the cd rom drive and hook you hdd up to it .. only thing you might have to mess with is the jumper(s) on back of your hdd to dictate whether its slave or master .. cable select might do it either way , but isnt always a read correctly by motherboards.

I would also recommend that you throw some other virus protection onto that comp , like Avast .. or AVG . or the free 30 day trial of NOD32 ..or all of them , lol . Just while you hook up this drive and then you can remove them after you scan/backup/whatever the drive.

maybe throw on Spybot Search & Destroy (update and run immunize feature), spywareguard, spywareblaster, ad-aware , and even windows beta Windows Defender ..update them all and scan the crap out of that drive as well after you scan for viruses

maybe ccleaner too

even a bigger question.

if this virus is a backdoor to try and get into other computer, what would it benifit from shutting my computer down so that it COULDNT infect anything else? does this even seem like the type of virus that would cause the computer to restart over and over?
