I'm in the market for a workstation that can run as many vms as possible for practice labs. I'm not yet at the point to have a dedicated box on my lan. Below is the parts list. Comments and thoughts are encouraged and appreciated: Anyone with a similar setup or need? If so how many vms do you run and on what hardware?



x4 Samsung 840 EVO Series MZ-7TE120 120GB (SSD)

x1 Corsair Hydro H110 (Watercooler)

x1 NZXT H440 (Case)

x1 ASRock Z87 Extreme 6/ac (Hovedkort)

x1 Corsair AX860i 860W (Power Supply)

x1 Asus GeForce GTX770-DC2OC-2GD5 2GB (Grafic Card)

x4 Kingston HyperX Beast DDR3 PC19200/2400MHz CL11 XMP 8GB (DDR3-memory)

x1 Intel Xeon E3-1275v3 3,5GHz Socket 1150 Box (Prosessor)

Thanks for your input I was leaning that way myself but a lil unsure. Any specific reason why you prefer 2011 socket over 1150?

>32GB ram. Once you start loading up VM's 32GB gets to be not enough real quick.
 
It also depends on how heavy the VMs are. This is roughly what I have at work for my testing VM box:

E3-1225 (v something)
32GB ECC
2x 512 GB Crucial M4s (Raid 1)
2x 2TB something or other spinners (Raid 1)

Given that my VMs tend to only have 1GB allocated to them, I'll just let a dozen or so idle while I work with the 2-4 that I need to work with. Performance is totally fine for my needs.

Your use case seems to mirror mine. Looks like my above setup can handle the same load given that I shall have 4SSDs and 4x 1.5TB WD green drives in raid10
 
I'd go with Socket 2011 personally. That way, should you find you need more than 32GB of RAM, you can just add more.

I agree, and that makes sense but...
If he (or she) does their homework and research correctly then they that shouldn't be an issue. What I am saying is only they will know how much RAM they may need based on their workload. I find more times that people don't need more horsepower, they need to set the VMs up correctly.
 
Speaking of load. I just need a powerful enough workstation that can comfortably run between 4 and 12 vms for labbing and testing. I dont intend to keep them running 24/7. Just want to be able to do some heavy labbing and testing before investing in a full vmbox.
