I have a fairly old rig (see "Server Rig" in sig) that I am still looking to squeeze a few more hours out of, and I am contemplating adding a video card to it, I currently have a MSI NX8600GT in it, and I am running two monitors on it, but I have another monitor that I would like to add to the mix. I have been out of the game for too long now, and I am not sure what requirements/restrictions there might be to get this old rig to properly display on 3 monitors...
I don't game on this rig, it is primarily used for work, and I run Ubuntu Desktop as my OS.

I am thinking of purchasing this card and ploping it in my availabile PCI slot: SPARKLE 700020 GeForce 8400 GS 256MB 32-bit DDR3 PCI
Will that work in-tandem with the existing MSI NX8600GT ?

Any Cheap PCI / PCIE video card should work fine. Be warned that sometimes multiple graphics cards can be a configuration nightmare with linux, so I'd stick to an Nvidia chip on any additional card. The Sparkle should work fine :)
 
I was able to get 4 monitors working in debian with two quadro nvs295 cards. As long as both cards use the same driver you should be good to go. I was trying to use an nvs295 pci-e with an older nvs280 pci card at first but I could not get it to work. To the best of my knowledge this was cause the nvs280 used the legacy driver and debian did not like using different video drivers for the cards. The other option would be to invest in a matrox triple head2go or a dual head2go. This will make it trivial to setup.

I am trying to get 3 monitors working and I can't seem to make it happen.
My current setup consists of having the Dell ST2310 & Dell S2309W connected to the 8600GT working in TwinView mode. I recently purchased the 8400GS so that I could connect the HG216 up and have a third monitor running. But I can't seem to get it working. I have tried running them in a number of different configurations and I seem to be running into a wall. My experiance is similar to that of http://askubuntu.com/questions/142990/gnome-3-multiple-video-cards-xinerama-forced-fallback-mode

Is there any way to get these two video cards working with all three monitors in Ubuntu 12.04 running Gnome 3?

Any/All feedback is greatly appreciated.

BassKozz, this doesn't help your current situation but I would have replaced that 8600GT with a single Nvidia GT 640 for roughly $90. The 6 series has the ability to run three monitor out of the box along with being both cooler and quieter than having 2 older 8XXX series cards.
 
what does your xorg look like? Also how are you configuring using nvidia-settings? In my experience you need to get rid of twin-view and just go xinerama. It was the easiest way to get things working.
