Workstation videocard???

I'm trying to put together a $600-700 build for a friend of mine. He doesn't really do any gaming, mostly SolidWorks and some other engineering/design software.

I don't know anything about workstation GPUs. Would he be best off with one of them, or would a gaming card cut it?

You're not going to be able to get a respectable workstation card for a $700 build.
I'd recommend a consumer-grade GPU; they are more than enough to run SolidWorks...he just won't be able to get the "special" features like RealView (which, by some sad conspiracy, is only unlocked on "professional" cards).
