I'm building a couple of systems for an office I used to work at that does 2D Autocad work, and a small amount of 3D Studio work. The systems will be A64X2 4200+ w/ 2gb RAM.

For the 2D work a GF 6200 or ATi X600 would work great, well beyond need in reality (I use Autocad myself daily). I'm not familiar with 3D Studio though, for something to run 'smooth' on one of these systems would it be advisable to ante up the extra $100 for an ATi FireGL V3100? For the money - around $200 - would a X800 or 6800 series card be superior? Are there any driver issues to be aware of if getting a non FireGL series card? nVidia Quardos seem pretty spendy (~$500) for what this office does.

3dstudiu = OpenGL cards = ATi FireGL or NVIDIA Quatro cards - they are professional level open GL cards even last years model should do fine if it is only minimal video work in 3d studio.


as for 2d Matrox makes the king of 2d cards period!


You can NOT compare an FireGL with an x800 or a 6800 with a Quadro - the OpenGL cards will kick this crap outof any "gamers" card because they are made to do 1 thing and 1 thing very very well. i think the extra $100 would be more then worth it, worse case down grade the CPu to a 4000 or something if it is a itght budget.
 
you can compare it just fine. After a trip through NVstrap in Rivatuner. Depending on the card you can make a GF act like a Q. FX5900 is a Q3000. FX6800 is a Q4000.
 
Can make it "act" yes but will it truely perform the same :)

if cost is an issue then soft modding to "possibly" make the cards work like opengl cards is an option, if not spend the exrta $100 and KNOW you are getting a card that will do what it says it will.
 
Quadros are better than FireGLs flatout, sorry ATi f*nb*ys it true, for opengl use quadros. 2d us a matrox this or last generation.
