my "during the school year" job is computer service support for the housing department at UIUC.

students are stupid, viruses are smart.
winsmc has been seen on these machines for 5 days or so, just now even recognized by dats for norton and mcafee.

in short, 10-12 hour days before classes started, now today I had 5 hours of class and worked 10 hours.

so I decided, work sucks, fold more.
My work sucks, but I b0rged two of the computers we have in our "helpline office" where people can call to ask for some help.

I think it's a good philosophy...folding always makes everyone feel a little better...especially when the electricity is free!

fold on

good to know you have found an outlet for frustration. that it gets you boxen for FAH doesn't hurt either (its better than mine... which is to go play GTA3 recklessly or something)

b0rging is fun!
p.s. it really is all relic's fault

Drag you're ass into a factory for 8 hours, 5 days a week. Watch incredibly stupid people make very bad decisions on a regular basis. Listen to people 20 years younger than yourself, make decisions, that are so very wrong, and have to agree because this is what the company wants. I fight daily against stupidity, and poor priorities. I'm still losing the fight, but I fight on.

Blech.

Then there are those of us who would like to be working.
Good luck in your search. Until you find something, folding is your job!

You might have me beat...

but...yesterday: wake up at 6:30, find notebooks for class (1st day of class omg) because I didn't have anytime to do that before
class 8-1
work 1-11
finally find some real food to eat at 11:30

and the best part about those 10 hours of work...we set up a system so users could clear themselves of viruses and run windowsupdate, etc. In the end, makes everything go faster. But we have to verify that they did it right. So I spent 10 hours going through the same exact 6 steps, over and over and over and over and over and over again. :)

and all the while the little stupidities of people shine through. like the guy who couldn't understand "type cmd in that box" so I said "cmd, as in cat, michael dog"

I swear to god he typed "catmichaeldog" in the run box and hit enter.
Ah well, at least some of it's good for a laugh!

I feel your pain Ch1m3r4. I am also a student technician at my college. Sometimes I just can't believe how little people know about their computers. Move-in time is the worst. Working 10 hours a day for minimum wage. Just think resume, just think resume. :D

I see you're point......

You would hope that the folks you deal with, would be a little more computer literate than their parents. I am constantly amazed at the things people will pay customer service for. In you're case, you gotta do it for free. It is amusing, but I take the cash anyways.

SP2 should really keep you hopping, sorry.

I've been doing lots of reading on various compatibility issues, getting ready for the onslaught of computer$ in need of work. Most older folks, think paying the Norton's bill and clicking install now from MS Auto-Updates makes em safe. Any lock-up, is cause to grab the phone and a credit card.

Those students are fortunate to have someone (you), to call for help. Too bad they don't realize how much their folks are paying for the same services.

minimum wage?!?!?
wow, I'm sorry.
I make much more than minimum wage thankfully...

and yes, sp2 is weird. and stupid. but it is microsoft... :D

I used to do that customer support thing at my university too. Man, that stuff is the worst. I seriously could not take it anymore. Just got so grating on my nerves with the sheer amount of idiots that called in. After my 6500th case written, i pretty much called it quits.

I couldn't even borg there either! They seemed to be reghosting all the machines like once a week, and complaining about people installing and running services, etc. Blech... Thank god I'm not there anymore...

meh, this makes me think twice about thinking about taking a tech-service job when i get to college...thought i could make some extra $$ for folding...

Well, don't let my description COMPLETELY deter you from doing it. It was a pretty decent job for a while, and paid very well for an on campus job. Pay scaled up pretty quick. The beurocracy and idiot callers just get on your nerves after a couple years. At any rate, its a pretty decent thing for a resume if you haven't had (m)any tech related jobs before. I found it to be fairly worthwhile, I just got fed up after doing it for a long time. Who knows, maybe you could get a tech service type job at someplace thats much less retarded than my school was!

Oh how I tried!! For some reason, they were willing to put SETI on them, but not a distributed computing client that actually HELPS people. Blech.

This thread is pretty far from foldin'
BUTT
1) does the job pay or provide experience to get a job that pays ?
2) darn proud that all of you know the latest in technology, however you need to realize that there are (in the WORKING world) a lot of people trying to do REAL JOBS to SOLVE REAL PROBLEMS. It may be banking, farming, or whatever. As a NERD (new equipment relief doctor) we should help the DUFOS (Dudes Unaware of the Freaking Operating System).
I just got done with a pis-a$$ arguement of someone who wanted to read his e-mail via a web interface, over a modem, without an ISP. "You just plug it in" then go to google he thought, no dialing involved..
If you want to provide support you need to accept that the IT people need to make the computer as simple as a pencil.
Then, with permission, BORG THEIR PENCIL!!
