Work PC -> VMWare PC - Security measures?

Dear all,

My boss has granted me an old IBM NetVista A20 Celeron 600 MHz, for use as a work PC. I'm part of a call center in the IT-department of a large company in Denmark.
The PC (IBM 6269-E2G) has abysmal specifications, but gives me the possibility of working at home, instead of travelling 2+ hours per day, and sitting in an empty office in the evening, when noone's calling anyways.

I don't have a regular PC monitor or keyboard/mouse, so that got me thinking, why not create an image of the work PC, and run it in a virtual machine on my private laptop.
This is of course against company security regulations, but would they ever notice the hardware/machine change?

The system runs Windows 2000, with a VPN connection to company domain through an ADSL internet connection.

I requested an old, used IBM Thinkpad, but he couldn't give me that.
My apartment is only 31 sqm, so that leaves me no room for a normal computer setup. The laptop could be tossed under the bed when not used.

Any other suggestions of my options, are very welcome.
 
Why don't you just remote desktop/VNC/pc anywhere your way into your work desktop? If the computer is off maybe just install the same programs at home that are on your work pc? Just trying to find a way around it so that you don't get fired for making images of company computers.
 
I do have Citrix access. Can I use VNC, on my private PC, to connect to the work PC and then leave it in a closet with only power/network cables attached?
The tunneling by VPN doesn't isolate the PC from the rest of the local network?
 
Do you have access to VMWare P2V? You wouldn't be able to put an image of the physical machine on a VM without it. Pretty nifty tool. Works well. Would be required before you tranferred an image of a physical box to VM. Not sure how much P2V is. My guess would be very expensive.
 
The P2V software looks interesting, but I agree with you, that it probably is very expensive. I think it's geared/priced for server migrations.
 
Certainly it's market is the server environment. That's all I've ever used it on however it would definitely work on a workstation as well.
