1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
Just work applications (minimal requirements, no 3d), web browsing

2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
$1000 for everything including shipping and tax. That's definitely on the high-side, and that would need to include a dock so it can be connected to external keyboard and monitor (already owned)

3) Where do you live?
Boston, MA

4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. Please be very specific.
Full laptop, with DVD drive

5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.
Have an external monitor, mouse, and keyboard.

6) Will you be overclocking?'
Nope

7) What size monitor do you have and/or plan to have?
I'd like the laptop monitor to be as large as possible. It's for my mom and she'd appreciate having the extra viewing space. 14" minimum.

8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?
ASAP

9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? etc.
Nothing special

10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license?
Would want Win 7 included.

If you don't mind changing from Vista to Win7 once you buy the laptop, go check out Walmart. The ones where I live... Huntsville, AL have a big locked up bin of clearance laptops that have Vista on them.... and they are now selling them for another 40% off the already marked down price...

So $600 for a $1000+ laptop... and if you absolutely have to have Win7, then go buy it off of newegg.com... you will still be saving a fair amount of money.

If she travels a lot, I'd recommend a Thinkpad -- very sturdy and survives the rigors of travel very well. www.gotapex.com is a good place to find deals.

if you're seriously looking for a notebook

i recommend you look at http://forum.notebookreview.com instead of here

not saying nobody here is qualified to answer your question, just that you'll get a more comprehensive answer over there, since they only discuss laptops over there and cover every brand name.

it would be easier for you to decide based on that kind of system and feedback from their forum users.

edit: in the interest of full disclosure, I bought my Gateway 7811-FX based on the reading that forum for a month

i spent a month researching my laptop purchase

Also, if you're confused at all about components, or want to see multiple reviews for a laptop, go plug-in the information to the search engine at Notebook Check.

http://www.notebookcheck.net/

It has the most comprehensive set of benchmarks for notebooks and their GPUs (not that you care about graphics, but just FYI), and it also indexes reviews for all sorts of notebooks.

Those resources look very useful, and I'm sure I'll be checking any laptops I come across on those sites. I'd appreciate any recommendations if folks see decent laptop deals floating around... if this was for a gaming laptop for myself, I'd be doing tons of research - but with Christmas right around the corner, I don't have the time to really do it right :[

well then, I should mention that they almost always have 15 percent off coupons for dell.com and you could snag a really nice deal with that kind of a discount

the notebookreview forums always post those kind of deals on there.
