Work Farm Down, Possibly OUT!

After darn near 6 years of going [H]ard for UD, it seems that my work farm is out of commission, due to some recent changes in the infrastructure. I am not sure if these changes are permanent yet, but it is quite likely that they are. If something changes in the near future, I will ramp up again, but for now, I have to settle for the meager numbers I can squeeze out of my home computers.

A real bummer to be sure, but that's the way these things go sometimes.
 
Just out of curiosity, what kind of changes in the infrastructure?

Odds are, work borg got pulled/network reconfig type issue.

@ Andreu- lemme know when moose gets within a ~ 30 day overtake and I'll see what I can do to negate that... anything to put a moose down!
 
Basically, the change that was made was a new proxy server/web filtering device.

This thing locked down a lot of things that were not filtered before, and apparently, that includes DC client traffic. This necessitated that I either talk to our security guy about it, or just let it go and give up. I did the former of course, but he did not seem overly enthused about making it available again. I think he had forgotten long ago that I was even doing this, and now that it has come to his attention again, given the more dangerous conditions on the net from a security standpoint, and the fact that he has grown much more paranoid than he used to be, he is less likely to allow it to continue.

You have to understand that 6 years ago, when I got permission to do this, I fired up a few stations, and it has been pretty much flying under the radar ever since. I have added a more stations along the way, but not so many that it would really shout above all the other network traffic and attract attention to itself. He really had no idea that the proxy server change had cause this problem for me, or little recollection about it even after I mentioned it. But once it was the topic of conversation, the vibe I got was not so much one of objection over my having done it, as much as reluctance to open a hole in the new service to allow it to continue.

What can I say? This was being done on their equipment, using their bandwidth, so if they say no, then I pretty much have no real avenue of appeal. I will try to gather some information on how secure these things are these days and show it to him, but short of his acknowledging that and allowing the clients to communicate with the server, that will pretty much be it for me.

I will keep you posted if there are any changes.
 
not sure how ud works...but doesnt it have a proxy setting and if you set that the same as IE then it should work just like websurfing....but i could be wrong...just throwing out ideas
 
I would think that the best argument for allowing UD through again would be the fact that it's been running for 6 years and hasn't caused a problem yet. He's probably a little embarrassed that he forgot about it and hadn't noticed anything running on the computers or any of the traffic it generated. I hope he decides to let it through and forget about it again.
 
Well, old pal....it was fun while it lasted. Maybe the system admin will change his mind. :)
 
Oh, I have not thrown in the towel yet.

I am just trying to be strategic about it. If I go to his office every day begging for him to re-enable it, I think I would detract from my chances of it happening. But every few days, if I find I way to mention it in passing or work it into the occasional conversation, he might go for it eventually. Besides, I was closing in on the #100 spot for total points on the entire UD project, and I have not given up on cracking that milestone!
 
I would suggest that you find out as many specifics as possible before making further requests. Make sure you know what port(s), what protocol, and what outside IP addresses, and (if possible) how exactly the clients are getting blocked. Make the guy's job as easy as possible, like "all you need to do is open port XXXXX to these IP addresses". If he knows that "this programs only connects with servers X,Y, and Z on port W", he'll be more likely to go along with it. Fear of the unknown and all that...
 
Well, it is all but official sports fans. The farm is dead, at least for the foreseeable future. I talked to the guy about it yesterday, and while he did not specifically say no, he gave no indication he intended to alter anything to make it possible. I pretty much took that as a "No" without pushing the issue to hard. At this point, I think all I can do is fall back and ponder an alternative plan of attack, if there is one to be had.

It has been a good run. 6 years, and almost 14 million points. I forget when I took over the #1 spot on the team from Amy, but that too has been something special for me. I will continue to contribute with my three home computers. They are decent units, amounting to a total of about 8ghz between them (though my kids PCs are not on all the time), so it will do for now.

So, to folks like Moose, Supermen and Docmark (who seem to be the current points leaders in UD), I wish you god speed!
 
Sorry to hear that it ends this way, but at least you know you tried and got as much out of them for as long as possible. So ends an era, but who knows what is around the corner. ;)
 
So at this point it seems that you become a "Wise One" who knows very well what can be done not to mention how it can be done :) All new contributors usually have unspoken questions along those lines, so tell your story , especially to new DC'rs and let them know what great things can be accomplished !

Way to go Anderu, you have done a great job !

I know you were a UD guy...and while I hate to see any loss of work fall upon our team for that project, I know F@H has options in it to work with proxies. Would it be possible to instead borg those computers for F@H so at least some scientific contribution is still made during their idle time, or would this filter also filter those connections out?

From the looks of your point count now, I'd say you got your farm back (or maybe borged a Circuit City store?).

Ah, you noticed! I was kind of hoping to sneak in under the radar for a bit longer, but I should have known you guys would be watching.

I have found a way, at least temporarily, to get some of my work farm going again. It could still go away again with no warning, but for now I am grinding it out again. :cool:



 
Ok, Moose, now you can honorably go and open up a can on Anderu. Let's see a good race :)
