Work Display....

I've got to sort out a new display for work - the aging ViewSonic G220fb CRT that's on my desk has developed a "quiver" and it's killing my eyes. Since it's work, gaming really isn't an issue. My priority is something that's easy on the eyes, clear text and accurate colours.

My options are:

1) dual 17" LCD's (4:3)
2) single 19" LCD (4:3)

If I go with a single 19", i'm debating between the ViewSonic VX922 and VP930b - TV vs P-MVA I believe, tho I have read of backlight issues on the VP930b, which is too bad. Since I can't go larger then 19" tho, i'm leaning towards dual 17" displays as it may actually be more practical. The ViewSonic VP720B is the candidate in this case as the viewing angle (170/170) would imply that it's not TN (P-MVA like the VP930b???) and it's got a sturdy height-adjustable base. Thoughts?

Unfortunately, i'm limited to ViewSonic and HP product lines.

I would go with 2 17"s to bad you cant get dell, i would get 2 17" ultrasharp's

Yeah, it would be nice to have more options - standards tho.

dual 17s. I run duals but a 19 and a 17 and I couldnt go back to a single display exspecialy for work.

I've got some HP L1755 17" monitors recently, they are pretty nice, thin bezels, good base with height, tilt, and rotation. The only thing I think could be improved would be the viewing angle, it's listed at 176, but the colors start looking a little off much sooner than that. Little bit of ghosting, but not bad unless you look for it.
There really isn't a reason to go with 19" over 17", they both ouput the same resolution, unless you find it hard to read smaller text.

Yeah, I caught that one already. :)

I'm really leaning towards to the dual 17" displays. Anyone have comments on the ViewSonic VP720b? I really want something that's height adjustable but with thin bezels and a quality picture.

Viewsonic monitors have major reliability problems with DVI-D. Stuff like DVI ports randomly failing and requiring either an RMA or unspported firmware patches (n.b. which can only be applied if you have an Nvidia card) to get everything working again. Viewsonic hasn't taken any real interest in solving this problem.

If your only choices are Viewsonic and HP, go HP.

Thanks for the tip. We've been purchasing ViewSonic LCD's for the last 3 years and they haven't let us down yet - only a handful have had to be RMA'd. However, the majority of them have been running via VGA, so not personal experience with ViewSonic + DVI. Hmm, food for thought I suppose. We've just started buying HP displays and to be honest, we haven't had that many come in. From what I can see in the specs tho, it looks like they use primarly TN panels... will have to do some more research I suppose.

Hey. Just looked over the HP L1755 and it actually looks like a decent display. Do you know what type of panel it actually uses?

Samsung LTM170E8. Original PVA--not S-PVA.

 That's the type of panel in the L1755, not a suggestion of another monitor for you to look at.

And that boys and girls is what happens when you don't pay attention when reading... :)

Sorry, Overwind, I was off the ball on that one. I should have recognized it was the panel from the model number (LTM*). Doh.

Anyway, the HP L1755 may very well suit my needs. Not much difference between PVA/S-PVA from what I can yet it will have some advantages over the HP's lower-end TN-based displays. I will get some quotes today...

Bad news. Looks like i'll be stuck with the lower-end ViewSonic VA702B based on cost, even tho the ViewSonic VP720B and HP L1755 were only $70CDN more. So, no height-adjustability and no DVI for me... doh. And since we're giving the impression of running such a tight ship i'll probably have to put my displays on cardboard boxes as risers are obviously out of the picture.

Man...

I was just notified of a sale on Philips LCD's and, based on price, instead of the ViewSonic VW702b (value series) I can opt for the 19" Philips 190S7FB. It's got decent specs (brightness, contrast, viewing angle, VGA+DVI) but it looks like it's only 6-bit (16.2 million colours). I'm waiting clarification on the exact model (quote was missing the sub-model info /xx) so I can get the full specs...

Anyone have any experience with Philips LCD's?

190S7FB/27 is the full model - confirmed as 6-bit TN panel. I don't know... does 6-bit/8-bit really matter for office duty? I basically need something that offers good contrast and clear/sharp text. Brightness has never really been an issue with LCD's - they all seem bright enough to burn my eyes out.

So, it's between the ViewSonic VA702b and Philips 190S7FB/27

The specs on both pages lack a little detail but the Philips seems to win on contrast (700:1 vs 500:1), viewing angle (176/170 vs 160/160) and that it has DVI/VGA (ViewSonic is VGA only). Philips also has a 4-year warrranty, including the backlight.

Thoughts on the Philips?

Just to be clear... because of the pricing I can go with two of either display. I'm not limited to two 17's or a single 19.

I'm going to assume that the lack of response indicates that Philips LCD's are not terribly popular. Given the pricing, there are some better options or other displays that "tried and true" for only a little more money.

I think i'm going to give the Philip's a whirl anyway. It is a major brand so to speak and Philip's appears to have a solid relationshop with LG in terms of panels. Since i'm essentially comparing two lower-end (6-bit TN) anyway I don't see how I can "wrong" either way as neither option is ideal... I really we could have sprung for the PVA-based HP's. :(

Anyway, I will try to post some photos and my opinion of the Philips 190S7FB/27 when they come it.
