Work Computer Dilemma

My boss has asked what kind of new computer I would like at work. Basically I have two choices and am having a hard time deciding between the two. So I have come to the [H] for answers:

Choice #1:
New Desktop (HP): P4B 2.66, 512 PC2700, 40GB, Integrated Video, CDRW.
Old Laptop (Toshiba): P3 500, 256 PC100, 20 GB, Integrated Video, DVD.

OR

Choice #2:
New Laptop (IBM Thinkpad T41): PM 1.4, 512 PC2100, 25GB, Radeon 7500, DVD. (with a Docking station at work)
Old Desktop (Toshiba): P3 666, 256 PC100, 15 GB, Integrated Video, CDROM.

What would you guy go for?

I am not sure how often I will work from home, probably not more than once a month. With choice 1 I will be mainly using the desktop at work and occasionally be using the laptop to work from home. Basically with choice 2 I will be using the Laptop as my only computer.

If your going to be primarily working in the office, go for Option 1. When your home, your work laptop doesn't need to do much. I work from home often, and my laptop sits on my desk next to my home PC, because it doesn't have to do much (e-mail, JabberIM, AOl IM, netmeeting, office apps).
 
I'd get the laptop. Use the docking station and not bother with the older desktop.

Personally since getting my T30 the only time I've used my desktop is to let other people borrow it as a spare and to store some extra files. File storage could easily be done with an external hard drive anyways.

You will love the T41. They are built exceptionally well.
 
The T41 is a very very nice laptop, someone else here at work got one. But the problem I am having is putting the new Desktop and Laptop right next to each other the new Desktop would be a lot faster. So why would I want the slower machine (new laptop) if I am only going to take advantage of it being a laptop once a month.

Sure the desktop may be faster, but the laptop is more versatile.

What are you going to be doing with it that speed means so much? I use my laptop for school, music and web browsing. If you are using it for similar things, it will suit your needs just fine.

Not to mention having a portable notebook will come in handy during travel. You can transport your work to your home and continually be working on the same system which is a bonus.

If you plan on doing graphical things with your system, you may want to look at getting the desktop, but otherwise I would definitely stick with the T41. Once you get a thinkpad, you will never go back.
 
I'd suggest laptop as your first choice. It just gives you alot more when it comes to work. What it doesn't have in speed it will make up for in versatility. And you never know when you'll need to take a computer with you. :)
 
I really don't do anything that requires too much processing power. I mean I am working on a P3 666 right now. And it would be very nice to be able to take my work with me where ever I go without first having to copy it to another computer. And hey I can even install some games on the T41 for when I am "working" away from the office.

Use the lapy with the dock at work , have you boss get you a new monitor
 
I'd vote for the laptop. The T41s are kick ass, and you won't notice that 'slower' laptop unless you are doing some CPU heavy apps.
