Wordpress Blogging Question

I have downloaded a few wordpress themes and I am trying to edit the pictures (jpegs, gifs) that come with the theme. I am able to edit the pics in photoshop but when I upload the new file and replace the old file the changes do not show up.

I even tried opening a new wordpress blog and uploading a theme with only pictures I modified, yet it somehow reverted to the stock pictures.

It seems like the pictures that I am editing are not the pictures the themes code is pointing at.
