Ran into a bit of a problem. I have been running SuSe V.9.1 64 bit version for a while now on my Amd 64 system. Worked just great as far as I could tell untill yesterday when I made the mistake of letting it update the system with updates and patches. Somewhere along the line, when I rebooted after all the updates, it now gives me an error message when ever I try to boot back into linux. The error is:

ERROR 16: Inconsistent filesystem structure

Does anyone know what happened here? Does this mean a complete reinstall of the operating system or is there some way to fix it?

well, i don't really know linux, so all i can suggest is to re-install SuSE; but you might get more help if you post this in the Linux forum.

It has been posted in all linux forums. Reason it is posted here also is I am a member of this forum and know that there are a few folders out here who run under linux and was hoping one of them might know a way to fix this without a reinstall and starting from scratch again which is a bit more of a hastle than reinstalling windows. Over the years I have done so many winders installs that it is second nature anymore.

err, i didn't mean go to another site and post it, although that will help, i meant post it here: http://www.hardforum.com/forumdisplay.php?f=96 in the linux/bsd sub-forum of the [H]

additionally, if you have posted it there, you'll be breaking the rules by cross-posting...so maybe just PM a mod to move the thread for you....

You clearly have access to the interent so why not download a linux livecd such as knoppix and see if that can access the files on the hdd. Some livecds can be used to fix errors, I recommend visiting www.distrowatch.com and reading through the various linux distros to see which is best suited to help.

Maybe the "ultimate boot cd" can help in this instance too, though I have never tried to fix a linux file system with it I have found it very useful for other issues.

you have a better chance of data recovery if you're on the ext3 fs (or another journaling filesystem) fdisk (the linux one) may have some way to fix it/recover the filesystem structure. you will, however, need linux to do this. so you should get knoppix or something like it that has fdisk in it (heck, tomsrtbt should do just fine for this as long as you can deal with command prompt)

i'll see if i can get my brother in here if you can't figure it out. he's better with linux than i am.

good luck.
