bricked my 4th card in 6 months.. dang im on a roll..

2 8800GT's bite the dust..
1 8800GTS 512mb
1 7300GT

you would of figured id of learned by now.. but nope.. i cant deal with my cards running at stock speeds..

some odd reason the new 178.XX drivers do not like the 1.1v bios mod on the 8800GT.. bricked 2 8800GT's with the 178.13 drives in the last 4 weeks.. as long as i left them at stock speeds they were fine.. killed the first one with an aggressive 760/1850/1000 overclock.. so i figured id try the second card at the speeds i was running before i did the bios mod.. with the bios mod still installed.. had it running at 700/1750/1000 it survived 5 hours of supreme commander.. then nvidia drivers crashed.. except this time it decided it would take my card with it..

Before you drop some major coin on another card that hasn't given up it's magic smoke, might it not be a good idea to look at your PSU? Thinking about age, original build quality, efficiency, etc it might be worth looking into.

I know what you are doing to your video cards is relatively bleeding edge, and I don't know that much about PSUs, but I figured it might be worth looking at.

its not my power supply because this happened on 2 different systems.. i had 1 8800GT in my file server which now has a 4870.. and the other 8800GT in this system.. i also took the 8800GT out of this one tried it in my fileserver and its dead.. i have a thermaltake TP 750w in this system and a corsair 550w HX in my other system..

I'm going to try and put the stock cooler back on my 8800GT and see if i can RMA it since it is an eVGA card..

well the graphics cards not dead.. i just took my 4870 out of my file server and threw my 8800GT in there and its working perfectly fine.. now the only question is.. is my motherboard dying/dead or is it my psu?

since everything is booting up.. but the display isnt working..(its not working with the 7300GT in it either which uses no power source from the psu).. the keyboard/mouse which are both usb and have LED lights arent turning on either and the hdd's sit hard locked like they are loading but doing nothing.. so im leaning to the motherboard more then the psu.. i see no reason the psu should be bad since everything is turning on.. eg. LED's on memory all work, all hdd's spin up.. all 5 fans turn on w/ LED's working.. so if you guys have any ideas on what i could check to see if its the motherboard or not.. please let me know.. since i really dont have the money to go out and buy another am2 board unless i sell all these old 754 boards i have..

Get an old PCI video card.. not PCIe, just the plain PCI.. see if it works with that installed instead of the PCIe card. Should be able to find a used/new one at some mom and pop for under $20.

yeah thats what i was figuring id do.. i know i have one in this house some where.. just not sure which of the 9 boxes of computer crap its in..



*UPDATE* welp after hours of trial and error i think ive narrowed it down to the memory.. its the only thing that hasnt worked in both systems.. i was able to boot up my main rig using my 7300GT and some generic kingston memory.... oh well this crucial ballistix tracer 2x1gb pc6400 has served me well if it comes down to that being the issue..
