I gave my friend my old Dell Dimension dekstop with P3 1.6 Ghz processor to replace his horrible Celeron. He put in his own harddrive, memory, cd drives, etc. The problem is there is a conflict with some of the parts. We can't figure out which parts. All of them worked fine when we tested them in other computers. There is a little yellow light that likes to blink on the motherboard. We found out the memory was faulty, we replaced it, but it still won't boot. Any info on part conflicts or suggestions would be helpful. thanks.
 
did he have winXP on his old HD? that will cause it to not boot... also, you really shoudl reformat and reinstall windows if you switch the mobo and everything out from under it...

if it is winXP and you dont' want to reformat, put in the xp cd.. and to go repair installation...

also, will it not post, or jsut not boot?
 
he formatted the harddrive so it was a fresh harddrive. no OS on it.

but on the mobo near the dim slots for the memory, there's a yellow light that goes on, a green light that blinks, and a beeping sound. the same sound if you slammed the keyboard and it beeps at you. lol. i've done that a shitload of times.
 
so you are seeing nothing on the monitor? no post screen (the screen where it tests the memory and lets you go into bios and shit)

pull out everything that is not necessary for the computer to work.. you need video, memory, mobo, cpu + heatsink, psu.. that's it... then add things 1 by one...
 
Hi, I'm Chonuts friend who has the computer.. Basically, I can't get it to boot period.. I put in 2 256mb sticks of pc100 memory, a 12gb maxtor harddrive, a inno3d geforce4 mx440, a CD-RW drive that came with the pc, an ethernet card, and a floppy drive.. The cpu+heatsink is in. The computer powers up, but on the mobo, near the memory slots, there is a yellow light that goes on as soon as I put a power cable into the power suply, and when I turn the computer on it just beeps at me constantly and a green light comes on right near the yellow light. I have no idea what it means. I've tried putting in almost complete stock stuff, but it just doesn't seem to want to work. I can't get a screen on my monitor or anything, it just beeps at me constantly and the yellow and green lights stay on.. I've tried doing it with the case closed and of course open.. One of chonuts friends said to reset the bios, but I looked for a good 15 minutes and could not find the jumpers to reset the bios.. Any other suggestions? Just post here =).. Thanks a lot
