Wolfenstein

Do we at least get nazi chicks in leather? :D

Blondie nazi zealots in tight fitting black leather outfits, running directly at you only to be mowed down, 50 yards away, yeah.

Never understood why they even bothered with them, but I had a chuckle.

In this particular game they can raise the dead into much harder enemies. They can also shoot energy balls with their whips.

Just played some more. Yea, its no Crysis visually, but still looks pretty good :). Its fun too!

I've always liked the D3 graphics so yeah, it looks good to me. I like the style.

Just shut it down trying to beat the "Queen" thing. I won't say more not to spoil.

Must sleep...................

Wolfenstein has a little more originality to it than Crysis, and it may not look as good, but Mid-range gfx + great gameplay > high-end gfx + generic gameplay any day.
Wolfenstein is fun, but I just really have never been able to get into the Nazi games

Rofl...now thats funny, a game that has been rehashed three times over is more original than crysis. Funny shit. :D

Just started playing it,I'll pretty much echo the feeling that graphically it's no Crysis, but it's fun.It does seem a bit too tailored towards the consoles. The one thing missing that bugs me is no quicksave,I hate the "checkpoint" method of saving games. It's too early to pass final judgment on it,but I don't think it will surpass RTCW on my list of favorite games.

I wish it had quicksave also but I gotta say that of the games I've played with a checkpoint system, this has been the best. Only a couple times I can remember being annoyed.

I think I'd most like to save during the boss fights. You get 'em almost down then one little oops and you gotta fight the whole thing over.

I agree with you there.

I didn't mean that it had to look as good, lol. I just mean that it by no means is something that is running on an impressive engine or anything, but they did really good job with the textures and the overall feel of the game. You look at games such as GTA IV and while the engine may be impressive as far as functionality goes, some objects look like utter shit. With this game, everything is very well detailed.

Whats funny is that the cut scenes do not look as good as the game itself, lol.

If anyone is using HT Omega Striker --> Z5550, which settings do you use to get 5.1 Sound? Im using Optical Out and im not sure how to get it working

Yeah,it's a pain in the boss fights.I'm hoping the two I've gotten to aren't typical of all the bosses, the mutated scientist and the fat Nazi officer. The levels themselves are straight out run and gun action, then you get to the boss and you can blast them all day and not win,you have to figure out some gimmick to beat them.Once you do it's almost too easy,I prefer a real shootout.

Quick save would be a great thing to patch into the game.

I agree. I had one boss just a hair from over and had to start the whole thing over because a table or chair got in the way.......arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh.

I was a bit skeptical in buying the game after reading the reviews by other members regarding it, but I'll admit that it was actually pretty fun.

But I'll agree that quick save would have been a nice feature.

On a side note, did anyone get the feeling that this game resembles the first Hellboy in multiple aspects?

Ditto on the gimmick. Once you figure out the pattern, boss fights are weaksauce.

However, that last guy gave me fits. I had to walk away a couple of times.

Actually, the whole supernatural/Nazi thing brings Indiana Jones to mind with me,in fact a crossover game with Indy and BJ working together would be great. It's a historical fact that the Nazi's really were obsessed with the supernatural, but it wasn't until Raiders came out that it became widely known.

The single player is pretty bad. The journal/map objectives and town hub system are pretty terrible. I honestly really hate going back to the same place, having to talk to people... it really slows the game down too much. It's like they're milking every bit of the game trying to extend the hours you get out of the game.

The veil is pretty cool. However, it is random. Random pools to refill all over the place as well as random ladders leading up to places. It seems as though it was forced in at the end of the development cycle. They should have just done the veil similarly to the crysis suit where it just refills over time by itself.

The implementation of gold/intelligence/tombs is stupid as hell. It also seems forced and very last minute. Often times, they just hide gold/intelligence randomly in the corner of a room. Give me a break, what a waste of time. Not to mention the whole weapon upgrade system, it makes me regret picking up all the shit because I have to spend it after each map.

RTCW was one of my fav single player games. This game is just completely disappointing.

Wolfenstein is about what I expected it to be; pretty hammy, only good for the action. I agree with the others about the "story" just slowing it down...I get frustrated with the long-winded bullshit that everyone seems to need to say. But, once you skip the talking it's back to action, and I find it quite satisfying.

To be honest, this isn't a $50 title. If there is anyone out there reading this thread looking to see whether they should buy, I would say wait until there's a sale. This is worth $30 at best, in my opinion.

Man, I honestly don't know what people are complaining about. I played it for a few hours last night, expecting the worst after reading this thread, and effing loved it. It's not supposed to be a serious ww2 action game... it pays a LOT of homage to the original Wolfenstein 3D which I thought was really cool. RTCW was a great game, don't get me wrong, but much of it didn't at all feel like Wolfenstein IMO. I remember reading an interview with ID software back in the mid 90's about Wolf 3d and what they wanted to do with it, versus what they were actually able to pull off due to technology limitations and this game is a lot closer to their original vision than anything that's been made so far.

Consolitis? how so? It doesn't have the latest cutting edge graphics and particle effects, but it still looks great... plays outstanding (smooth as butter maxed out @ 1920x1200) and has a lot of action w/some humor. Again, it plays a lot like the original wolf3d in that aspect... simple yet fun. It almost has a slight goldeneye feel to it. I also like that they went a little RPG with it. My only real disappointment was the difficulty... even on the hard setting it's pretty easy. People like to throw that buzz word around way too often these days. When I think of a shitty console port, I think of FF7, RE4 and Overlord... not this game.

Can't wait to play it some more. Still haven't played online though... so my opinion might change a little, but the game is deff. worth the $50.00. It seems people just want something to bitch about.

^ +1 I agree with you dr.

I played the SP campaign for the first time last night, and had lots of fun!! I really like that gravity gun thing. I thought the graphics were great, and kept me going/interseted, couldn't stop for at least 2hrs.

It's not super great but I've been having a blast with the single player. I feel like I've easily gotten my $45 worth even if the MP is DOA. Sure, it's not perfect. Sure, I wouldn't have minded more things to do and such, but I know I've played far worse games than this by leagues and I've unfortunately paid more than $45 a pop for a lot of those games as well.

I picked the game up yesterday. I don't really dig the consolized menu in the beginning. like all Doom3 engine games that FPS lock is annoying (as per usual I will take care of that). the speed of the game @ 2560x1600 (w/ 4870x2) on my setup wasn't butter like (though to be honest it could be that EVE was also running at the same time, or that the SAS controller on the asus p6t deluxe isn't so great and my hdds were being beat around). I plan to further investigate that tonight when I get home though. but when the game play wasn't lagging (for brief moments) I was having fun. so all in all my opinion of the game is currently high!

Dumb question and I'm probably missing something:

When I use a scope on a gun, I can't see through it. It's dark and black. I don't see any signs of graphics anamolies and I've had no problems with the game whatsoever.

Am I missing a step or some catch here?

EDIT: Heh, I'm updating my GPU driver. I'm a little more behind on that then I thought I was. I'll post an update afterwards and see if that's all it was.

EDIT: No dice. So what's the trick with the scopes?

EDIT: Found it. Here's the trick: If you go in the .cfg and do the edit to get rid of the head bobbing in the game, which I had done, you lose the scopes. Just a heads up to everyone.

The multiplayer was never much of a consideration for me so here's my mini-review of Wolfenstein after about 5 hours of play:

Graphics: 8.5/10
Its not Crysis, its not supposed to be. It runs smooth, no lag and as a whole looks pretty good.

Gameplay: 6/10
- Corridor shooter with the worst of console "check every corner to get achievement X or sack of cash Y" but it makes no sense normally
- The street fights get old FAST... been through them only a few times and I already know where the SAME enemies are and the quickest way to dispatch them. Every time.

Sound: 8/10
Sounds good

Final comments:
- Raven knows how to make nice feeling guns, that much they did great, and deserve praise for it.
- Its fun.
That said, I doubt I will finish the game, I might depending upon how other things go, but end of next week I'm away on a trip and Majesty 2 comes out, it might take over, or I might go replay Stalker CS.

Good to know, I was thinking about turning the head bobbing off. This is one of the first games that has made me a little nauseated when playing due to the harsh head bobbing while running.

It screws up the scopes and the running. It's better to not do it unless you really don't care about ever using a scope which I wouldn't recommend. ;)

What's interesting here is: I usually find that I like v-sync off for most of my games but I actually found that this game behaved better with it turned on.

That may help some of you out with this if you haven't done so already.

I'm borrowing this game from a friend, but so far, I'm actually enjoying the single player. I wouldn't call it a RTCW replacement but its something to tide me over until next month for Aion/etc. I'm gonna agree with the bobbing though, I feel too afraid of touching the MP, given the horror stories.

This is the ONLY game i've played that makes me slightly nauseated and disoriented. It's the combination of over-dramatic head bobbing and narrow field of view.

I got about halfway through the SP, then the game glitched and died, after that it would only load my saves into a black screen with a pointer. New games played though.

Uninstalled it and stuck it on the Meh shelf.

"Uninstalled it and stuck it on the Meh shelf. "

This ^^^ actually made me chortle.

I'm enjoying it so far. It feels like a worthy follow-up to RTCW.

It has a deliberately oldskool shooter feel to it, but with a few fresh things to mix it up a little.

There's nothing revolutionary about the gameplay or graphics, but it has an overall great level of polish. They got all the important stuff right - blasting Nazis into bits (literally) has never been as much fun. Oh, and the boss battles are outstanding at times.

One thing I wasn't expecting was the hub levels with the factions, merchants, missions etc. I'm noting a hell of a lot of similarities to Far Cry 2 here, but fortunately it's not as mind numbing as that. You search for gold to buy upgrades to your weapons and powers which is pretty cool, and satisfying when you get some nice bits added on to your guns.

I did find traversing the map and talking to characters rather tedious at times, especially when you encounter the same battles more than once, but when you actually get into proper missions it's a whole different game.

Overall it feels like a mixture of RTCW and Quake 4, with bits of Far Cry 2, FEAR and Prey added into the mix. I wouldn't say that would make it greater than the sum of its parts, but if you enjoyed any of those Wolf is well worth a look.

^^ Good call here.

Off the top of my head: The hospital level easily could have been a level out of either Fear 1 or 2 for sure.

I like this game a lot (Single player.) I'm going to be sad when I'm done with it. $45 well spent even if the MP is DOA.

Finished the game. Was pretty good. But hard difficulty was just far too easy, in that sense, feels a bit consolized.

Also the whole, lets look for tomes/gold/intel is retarded.

8/10 from me. Haven't tried MP but don't plan to either.

I'm playing it on hard too, and it's not particularly challenging. I think mainly because of the weapons and veil powers being somewhat overpowered, and the abundance of ammo. Still fun though.

Particle gun with the auto arcing is just too ez, but fun :D

Oh yeah, and regenerating health. It's a fad that needs to die IMO. Takes all the challenge away.

Plus it was fun eating food in Wolf to get your health back :p

The MP had kind of a throwback feel to it, I liked it a lot. The matchmaking was horrific and the server browser blew (this is on console) but I'm sure the PC version would be better in all the usual ways.

I like the ammo supplier/doctor/etc class distinctions though, makes me feel more useful if I'm not getting kills.
