WMV Acceleration Quality

Does anyone else find that video quality when using WMV acceleration suffers when using WMV acceleration? I sure do. It isn't quite a major problem in the sense that it only happens with a few videos that I have. But it IS a major problem because the amount of distortion is significant. I am currently using Catalyst 6.5 with an X800 Pro flashed to an X800 XT PE. Here are a few comparison screens:

WMV Acceleration ON:

WMV Acceleration OFF:

Areas to note are the bottom left hand corners of the image.

The video is the high definition Halo 3 announcement trailer which can be found here http://www.bungie.net/News/TopStory.aspx?link=Halo3Announcement (large version).

Another video also does this and not surprisingly, it is a video from Bungie. It is the Behind the Scenes video of the Halo 3 trailer, found here http://www.bungie.net/News/TopStory.aspx?link=e3makingof (bottom of page). It is the same type of image distortion.

I am positive this is due to the WMV acceleration. What I am not sure of is if I am an isolated case or if this is an issue other people experience. I am fairly sure that it is not due to any faulty components. I experience no artifacting of any kind in any of my games (Counter Strike: Source, Oblivion, Half-Life 2).

One thing to note about this glitch is that it occurs for maybe about 3 seconds at the longest, then will quickly disappear. I am not sure if this is based only on time or rather the change of the image on screen.

I noticed a little bit of a decrease in quality on WMV HD acceleration on certain videos from microsofts website. It wasn't a lot but I noticed it but thought it was just me at first. I can see your pretty easily too. I too have an x800pro but mine isn't flashed. I figured the trade off was a little worth it as the videos still look much better than any standard quality video that i've ever seen.

I dunno... I would think this to be an absolute travesty if degredation in quality is to be expected when using WMV acceleration. This was originally on the parent video card forum because I had also wanted to get some feedback from nvidia users, but I guess someone else thought differently.

I used Ati tray tools to disable dv, and I enabled deblocking on divx and such..much better.
Besides, I think my CPU is strong enough to handle decoding wmv's.

Care to explain this 'dv' option? I am also using ATI Tray Tools.

its like it thinks the fog is a distortion or something and trys to filter it out

You also got to remember these wmv don't have super high bitrates. Usually they are about the same as a dvd so you can't really expect miricles in quality.

That doesn't make any sense whatsoever. Regardless of what the bit rate is (I do believe the bitrate on the video is 8000 or 9000 kbps), the video shouldn't be producing two different pictures.

Think of it this way: The whole point of buying a video card is to accelerate your 3D game applications, right? Lets say you had some crappy onboard graphics that barely even ran the game before, and now you get some uber sweet video accelerator card such as an X1900XTX, but the game looks WORSE than before. Runs faster but it looks worse. This isn't really the point accelerating.

WMV acceleration should be keeping the same video quality, but the decoding process should be faster. For me, WMV acceleration does help lighten the load on my CPU and video is significantly smoother on a few high resolution WMV's and WMVHD's. But, the problem here is the fact that some video's have video quality that is far worse than without WMV acceleration.

When you accelerate the rendering or decoding of something, you shouldn't be reducing the quality of it.

Maybe I'm just not directing the question or problem very well. Something I really want to know is if anyone else experiences this, regardless of video card brand (ATI vs nvidia). I'm trying to figure out if the problem is with just me and my system, ATI, or WMV acceleration as a whole.

It's the start of a new format. Hardware acceleration is going to have some tough times before they will get it right. I remember back in the day of Dvds introduction. I had Asus dvd player and Powerdvd installed on my computer. I had a concert Dvd of Rammstein. There is a lot of smoke going on in that video. Powerdvd hardware decoder couldn't handle it I kept getting rasterized smoke. Asus Dvd player though could handle it perfectly. Give it time but for now if you don't mind using software playback then it's probably the best choice for quality

I should have said DXVA, there is an option for DXVA_WMV, DXVA_WMV_PF, DXVA_MPEG2 and DXVAAYUV0.

Look in Advanced registry tweaks under video tweaks.
