Which would be a better performer if i play Half-life 2 and OVERALL?

1. Nvidia Geforce 6800 Ultra 256mb

Or

2. Ati Radeon x800 XT PE 256mb

You'll have to wait till HL2 benches come out, cause no one really knows right now.

if the CS:S tests from sharkyextreme and xbitlabs represent HL2 performance, then they will be about equal.

Now that ATi has released 4.12 beta, though, they should have the upper hand.

This is the correct answer, but I am willing to bet with the new drivers and everything, the XT PE will win. However, the difference will be probably neglegible, as it seems that both of these cards are running everything maxed out (1600x1200) in the Source stress test at around 70fps. Not sure though. If you want card now, I say get XT PE, if you want to be patient, wait for benchmarks.

I'd take my chances to say the x800 would best the 6800(just by their track record of D3D)

but a 6800 ultra SLI would win hands down

but it would be best to wait

It's hard to imagine my overall gaming experience being better. The XT is a demon from hell sent to rip through every game on the shelf. :p

at the performance level of both of them its pretty rediculous...both will play every game on highest resolution with insane amounts of eye candy....however...it most games and especially in doom3 the 6800ultra beats the xt by a few frames. In HL2 the x800xt is supposed to win, but when your already maxed out is the extra 10 frames really needed? so either one will suit your needs.

With money being no object. I'd say get the first one you came across. Both the XT PE and the Ultra are extremely hard to find.

Don't remember how nvidia draws and quarters ati in doom3? hmm? With my 6800 conistantly beating a card costing 200 bucks more....

And BTW, if you can somehow locate it (there is actually a place selling pre-build computers with these).....

6800 Ultra... EXTREME EDITION!!!!!

(Note: Dual PCPower&Cooling PSUs not included)

I said overall gaming experience, not Doom 3 experience (which is also perfectly enjoyable).

I don't find Doom 3 to be any more fun at 1600x1200 than 1280x960, both look good.

Good luck with your reading comprehension classes.

The 6800GT is a good card but it does not beat the XT PE. http://216.239.39.104/translate_c?hl=en&langpair=de|en&u=http://www.hartware.net/review_429.html

um the title of the thread is "money not an object"

o haha stupid me hehe so i guess two 6800ultra extreme edition in SLI :)

Yea, get the 6800Ultra's in SLI if money isn't an object, otherwise the XTPE. Rips up everything, and seems to be as fast/faster in most cames then 6800u.

Hmm.. tough call. I really would like to try out a 6800Ultra. The x800XTPE is a nice card, but the drivers are a real pain the ass. If you've had an ATI card and can handle it, i'd buy it. But Nvidia just rules in that department to me. The cards are pretty equal. I'd get the 6800Ultra right now.

My XT-PE gets 92fps in the stress test at 1600x1200 4x AA and 8x AF, ATI control panel set to high quality.

And the XT-PE rips the 6800's a new one in Far Cry....

I would personally go for an HIS Ice II X800 XT PE for a few reasons. In overall rate performance so far, reviews have definitely favored in the ATI direction ever so slightly. There are other factors though. For one, you only need 1 molex connection with the ATI card to properly power it. Next, the cooling on the card is quite spectacular. It's based off the VGA Silencer and it's rated at significantly lower decibel levels than the Nvidia equivalent. And finally, it just looks DAMN cool compared to the 6800 Ultra. It's just my personal opinion, but I think that most can agree with me.

Dear Hardforum Members,

I say is quality a Concern for Nvidia with Half-life 2?
Lets not just think about speed here ATI vs Nvidia, but let us think about quality between the two in relation to Half-Life 2, now is there a difference? I could have sworn I hear Nvidia was bad bad bad for quality with the FX chipset and Half-Life 2 last year. Does the same old true for GeForce 6..

If you are talking about image quality, the answer is no, the x*00 series and 6*00 series are basically identical in image quality. If you are talking about overall quality, the answer is no, the x800 and 6800 series are really close, bottom line.

What resolution are you planning to play at? It seems to be generally true that the XT PE is better at 1600x1200 resolution (OpenGL excluded). Often significantly. At 1280x1024 (and lower) with or without aa and af, the cards are pretty much evenly matched.

So, if you have an LCD screen with a native resolution of 1280x1024, you might be best off going for the 6800 Ultra as it will perform equally (or near enough such that there is no gameplay difference) to the XT PE, but will have the benefit of much better performance in OpenGL games. Remember that Doom 3 might have been a non-event, but the engine will see some use in the future.

If you want to play at 1600x1200 or higher, the XT PE might be the better card.

If money is no option get the x800 xt pe because you can easily afford to upgrade again in 5-6 months.

Visual quality is the same as my 9800 XT. The days of the FX have been over along time ago.

GeForce 6 is a new design over the FX. I don't think Nvidia recycles their cores like ATI does.
