I currently have a wireless pci card in my desktop, and integrated wireless in my laptop. They are in ad hoc mode, with file sharing, and internet sharing set. Everything worked fine until i installed SP2, now it connects, but the internet sharing and file sharing doesnt work :(

I tried the wireless networking wizard several times, i tried turning off the firewalls, redid the internet sharing.. nothing...

does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? thanks

Are you useing Home or Pro.

Because i thought i had read a while back that there is problems with networking with home. not just wireless but getting it to connect to a network.

Not sure if this is right though. anyone back me up, or tell me i'm wrong?

Its home... it makes a wireless network and it connections but theres no internet or file sharing.

Errr....ever consider configuring the built in WXP firewall to open ports? Or your wireless router, which you did not mention the brand of? It would be something live "virtual server" or "port settings" dependent upon the brand.

SP2 introduces automatic security "enhancements". You just need to configure said "enhancements". Also, as I mentioned before, your router may not be configured correctly...UPnP doesn't necessarily open correct ports anymore under SP2.

I suggest you go to your router's manufacturer website and check under support for help configuring the router, and support.microsoft.com for help with the firewall.

Hope this helps.

I was going to say something similar. You have to turn on file and print sharing in the firewall with SP2. I'm not familiar with how XP handles wireless connections automatically, I usually config them myself. It sounds like the problem is with the firewall though.

Same thing happens with Pro and wireless. SP2 eats shit for wireless.

Funny...I'm on an SP2 XP Pro laptop right this minute sitting on the back porch having coffee and smoking while replying to this.

My parent's auto shop is also on an SP2 wireless network. They don't hardly ever call me with complaints.

May I redirect you to support.microsoft.com, and your wireless access point or routers manufacturer for correct configurations.

Not trying to be a shit stirrer, but this is simply not true.

As i stated in my post, its an ad hoc, computer to computer network... a PCI card in my desktop, and an integrated wireless adapter in my laptop. There is NO Router All was working well, internet sharing, file sharing before i installed SP2.

sounds like a firewall issue, try turning off the firewall on each of the systems.

No need to open Port Forwarding - geez guys...you must want to be able to browse his files from the 'Net. The problem is most likely with Windows Firewall. He needs to configure it correctly. At home, my pc and my kids' pc are using wireless, w/ sp2 installed, and file and print sharing works fine. It's just a matter of configuring the firewall in Windows correctly.

WAP in this case would be each wireless NIC's.

SeanRiva, this is bad advice in what way, exactly?

Always excpetions but windows XP SP2 wireless support is improved. The guy who made that comment is apparantly clueless. SP1 has it's issues. SP2 is actually a very usuable wireless utility. Good enough to not use the Mfg's utility.

As far as the original poster, I'm kinda stunned I haven't seen this asked yet but are you getting an IP? If you rnternet is down then this is NOT A FIREWALL issue. File sharing perhaps but internet is a default exception. Actually it may not even be an exception, it just doesn't need to be. Got to a command prompt and type ipconfig /all and post your results.

Agreed on all counts. That's why my first advice was MSKB. Your advice to see if he's even getting an IP is also solid, and I'm glad that you recommended it, despite the fact that I forgot it. Though he must have had one since I think he did mention he could get on the internet.

Well, i got it working... all i had to do was:

reinstall all my wireless network devices
reconfigure my network
rebooted about 15 times
did the wireless network wizard 15 times

but now it works!

Glad to hear it. Now that it is done, as mentioned by ktwebb, I believe you will find WLAN is much more stable under SP2.

If you give SeanRiva's post a cursory glance, you'll immediately realize he had no contention with your MS/manufacturer support advice. So I'm not sure why you switched quotes and asked SeanRiva for feedback.

Unless I'm mistaken, your first advice was to allow exceptions in the XP firewall and forward file sharing ports on his router.

The firewall advice was reasonable though somewhat redundant; the OP said in the first post that disabling all firewalls had no effect on connectivity.

Advising the OP to forward file sharing ports is a tad bit unsafe, no? I can't figure out why you'd suggest this course given:

  • He had no issues previously with SP1, and no indication given that his hardware setup had changed.
  • The computers are connected in ad-hoc mode, with little reason to believe a router was involved at all, and no reason to believe that WAN to LAN NAT traversal had anything to do with the problem.
  • I can't imagine that exposing your PC to WAN traffic on the file sharing ports is a safe thing to do??
I think one of us (heck, it's probably me :) ) isn't quite wrapping his head around the issue. I guess I'm just interested in knowing why port forwarding was one of your first bits of advice?

You sir are brilliant! I did not have contention with his recommendation to go to the MFG or MSKB. If I had, I would have stated such.

That's what I was having problems with...
