as the title says..

I'm trying to increase the signal strength to an upstairs room. Currently the wireless router is in a first floor den and there are signal issues getting a consistent signal to the 2nd floor office. I know there are a bunch of things that affect wireless signal but I'm wondering if I can put an access point (or something) in the living room which is closer the the stairs that go upstairs to the office in like relay the signal in a way. Kinda like this...

Wireless Router--->new device in living room--->upstairs laptop

hope that makes sense.

1. Upgrade the antenna.

or

2. If you can run a cable use another access point.

or

3. Use a wireless repeater.

1.) Indeed, upgrade the antenna, on both the AP and on your computer.
2.) See if there is a mod for your AP that ups the broadcasting power (you'd be shocked at how far some of those things can broadcast when you bypass the safety features)
3.) see 1 and 2.
4.) Move the AP from place to place in hopes of finding an area where the signal can penetrate.
5.) Buy a repeater.
6.) Buy an AP that is designed to have good range (this is usually at the cost of throughput, but seriously, I doubt you have a 50mb connection anyway).

Move the existing router closer to the ceiling by placing it on top of a tall bookshelf .

Could be as simple as unscrewing the old one and replacingit with a new one.
