wireless router(s) keep breaking....plz help!

Hello,

I have gone through routers as if they were expensive pieces of candy. I have had 2 netgear, 2 linksys, 1 buffalo and 2 dlink in the past two years. They all seem to do the same problem after a while of using them. My computers have a hard time connecting to the router for wireless or they slow my 8mbit speed to less than 56k speeds. I have multiple computers and some days it works great but with in the past week I cant even download faster than 20kps unless I hook my laptop to the modem its self. What in the world is causing me to go though routers so fast? I use to be on satellite internet and am pretty sure that accounted for most of the routers to fail. However, with my cable line I bought a new netgear router in november and now it is doing the same thing.... arghhh.

suggestions? Router suggestion?

I have reset the router, updated the router, used different computers, moved my computers, moved the router... etc

Please help
 
What happens when you are connected with a LAN cable instead of wireless? Does it connect fast or still sluggish? is there any other electric devices like a fridge or any fans on the same electrical circuit maybe causing interferance? Cordless phones used to cause all sorts of issues with this sort of thing in the past.
 
Connected with a cat5 cable the internet is awesome...I get 5+mbit/s when I do. However, when they installed the internet they put it in the most ridiculous place and I have to run a wireless setup.

I don't know about the electrical circuit but I have tried 3 different plugs.
 
The only other thing I can think of off the top of my head is bad wireless cards/chips....I had this problem with my laptop and a desktop and replacing the wireless cards is what finally cured it up...like you I went through the whole ugly process of replacing the router etc.
 
I just bought a new wireless chip for one computer and it is having the same problem as the other main computer and two laptops when they are connected via wireless. I think I will have to buy another router.
 
Ok, new questions.

I am going with a N router with gigabit.... should I get the dual band or single? All my computers are G right now but I would like to update my main computer to N and still use the other G adapters for now. What do you think
 
Well dual band might help to figure out if you are having interference problems on the 2.4ghz band (which is getting ridiculously over utilized these days).
 
microwaves and DECT phones can cause some major problems with wireless. Also, you might try changing the wireless channel you are one. Most default to 6, try 1 or 11 and see if it is any different.

Cordless 2.4ghz phones can cause a lot of issues, but DECT is actually a very good cordless phone to use without interference as it operates on the 1.9ghz band.
 
You have a power and or heat problem put it on a ups and make sure there is airflow.
