wireless router as wireless client?

Hopefully this will make sense...I have two wireless routers, one is being used as the main router for the house, with a couple wired connections that are working properly. I happen to have another wireless router, and am hoping to be able to use it in sort of a "client" mode to hook my desktop up to it in the basement. Basically, I'm looking for the 2nd router to talk to the main router as if it were a wireless NIC? Is this possible? I had a wireless access point that was capable of this client mode, and was wondering if there was any way to make the router do something similar. Thanks, sorry if that was confusing.

What type of router is it? There may be some 3rd party firmware available for certain models of routers which enable this feature, but generally the stock software on wireless routers do not allow them to act as clients, as can be done with APs and bridges.
