Wireless Networking Troubles

Ok, first I suppose I'll start off with my setup. Upstairs I have a Linksys 8 Port router with 3 systems wired into that. From the first port of the 8 port router I am running a cable downstairs through the wall, into the next room over from my wireless PC. The cable connects to the first port on the WRT54G w/ recent DD-WRT firmware upgrade.

I just recently did the upgrade in hopes of solving my problem. Prior to the firmware upgrade, I've been getting extensive packetloss in multiplayer games and extreme lag spikes where I will get 1000+ ping and cant even join a team. Browsing the web or using trillian my connection will drop or slow down constantly.

Now where things start to get unclear for me is what settings I should have on the WRT54G w/ DD-WRT. Since it is plugging into another router, I dont want it to be set as the gateway right so I currently have it set in a RIP2 Operating mode.
Aside from that, I really havent done any changes to the wireless router. The internet connection type is still set to auto config DHCP, it is still set as a DHCP server (should it be set as a forwarder?).

Right now, after the firmware upgrade, websites are still loading much slower then my wired systems even though it says my wireless connetion is Very Good and Im only about 20 feet and 1 wall away from the router. Im also still experiencing ridiculous pings and cant even refresh the server list in steam right now. Upstairs on my old system it pings fine to the same server. Basically nothing has changed after the firmware upgrade.

Thanks for any help, im hoping I can finally get a stable wireless connection in here that is capable of playing games.

Update: I am now just running off of one router, the wireless is now directly connected to the cable modem running on default settings and same the exact same problem.

Its like being back on 56k but worse and less reliable.
