Wireless networking problemo!

If this is the wrong forum for this then let me know and I'll delete this thread.

Background info: I recently bought this wireless card from Newegg. The modem/router I have (it's a hybrid) is a 2wire 1701hg. I bought this wireless card because I am moving this PC into another room. As of right now I can still use the ethernet connection since this PC is still in my home office. Other things to keep in mind are: I recently upgraded my internet to double it's current speed -I went from 3 mb/s to 6 mb/s (the highest speeds offered where I live - thanks medieval US telecomm!) The modem/router I am using is from when I first signed up for my internet, so it's about 4 or so years old.

The Problem: Once the new wireless card came I seated the card and installed the drivers - this was a few days ago. I immediately tested out the new wireless card a bit; doing general web browsing and running a speed test. I had no problems as of yet. I knew I didn't need to switch to the wireless connection yet so I swapped back to the ethernet connection and was using that without any problems.

Today, I decided to try out the wireless again. I swapped to the wireless and loaded the MLG live broadcast that I was previously watching. It worked for about 2 minutes and then suddenly the "Broadband Link" light on my modem/router went from a green light to an orange light. 10 seconds later the light turned green again and the broadcast was back up. Then, in another 2 minutes or so, I got the orange light again! :( This time I knew there must be something up. I changed my internet connection back to wired and tried the MLG stream while using that. It worked flawlessly. Not wanting to deal with this at the time, I decided to wait until later to try and fix things.

A few hours later I switched to my wireless and tried running the stream again. It worked a little bit better this time. I still got the orange light but it was in much larger increments of time. At this point, I also noticed that I wouldn't orange light (what I began calling it) when generally browsing web pages such as PBN. Eventually, I decided to try the wireless connection in a game, what I primarily use my PC for. I loaded up Team Fortress 2. I joined a server and everything was going well. The game was about to begin and, for those who don't play TF2, there's a countdown right before the game starts, once the countdown hit "10,9,8.." my connection orange lighted! This seriously felt like a slap in the face and I promptly died because of it. Damn you AT&T!

Anyways, the green light came back quickly and I played the rest of the match fine. The server switched levels and once the countdown got to "10" on the new map, my connection orange lighted again! Luckily, I wasn't killed this time. I continued playing the match like normal and midway through I noticed I was lagging a bit. I looked at my ping and it was ~110, my average being ~60 on this server. I don't know if this was just a general lag spike or if it had anything to do with this new connection. Upon seeing this I promptly exited TF2 and began looking for solutions to this problem.

Things I tried: As of now the only thing I tried was switching my new connection to OpenDNS. Once that was done I did the TF2 stress test (MLG broadcast is offline now) and I was still getting the orange light. I was told that I should call my ISP and have them ship me an updated modem/router as, mentioned earlier, my current one is around 4 years old.

TL;DR: (Read background info first): New wireless connection seems to "orange light" (disconnect) during high-bandwidth operations such as live broadcasts and gaming. I've already tried switching to OpenDNS, but to no avail.

Lastly, I know this was rather long, and I apologize. I thank whoever read this and can offer any advice for me.

Thank you!
