Wireless Interference (DIR-655 Xtreme N Gigabit Router)

So I just bought a DIR-655 Xtreme N Gigabit Router (draft-n just fyi). I haven't hooked it up yet nor do I have internet at my current apartment as I've just moved, but I've got a few questions about the router. I don't currently have the box with me, but apparently it can operate in 2.4Ghz and/or 5Ghz frequencies. I assume I can choose one or the other, correct? Does one frequency perform better/worse than the other, say in connection speeds and downloads? I assume 5Ghz would be less prone to interference right? that brings me to my next question...

I'm buying a cordless telephone. If I buy a 5.8Ghz phone, will it interfere with my router if it operates in 5Ghz?
