Wireless Headset for Immersion

Hello everyone, I am looking for a wireless headset to use when gaming on my PC, I play mostly MMO's and RPG's The main things I am looking for is surround sound, and immersion, I play games in a blacked out room and try my best to be immersed as much as I can, and my desk isn't as roomy as I would like so I feel like a wireless headset would let me relax and game more than a wrapped up cable entwined on itself. I don't want to spend over 200 but if the headset is -that- amazing, and well built then that deserves it.

Suggestions?

I searched for wireless headset options a couple years ago, and the best I found was the Sennheiser RS180. These are an open headset, which I personally prefer, but maybe not good if you need sound isolation. I think the RS170 model is closed.

Range is excellent. I can walk anywhere in my home, 2 story, 2500 sqft and never lose signal. I can get about about 10 feet into backyard before I start to lose signal (headset receiver is in my office in front of house). If I placed it in central spot, I would get reception in yard too. Only thing that kills the signal is our microwave. If I stand close to micro when it's on, I'll lose signal. Nothing else seems to interfere.

I would describe these as open, a tad bright with rich bass. They're not boomy or muddy. Very good soundstage for gaming. Excellent vocals in movies.

What drove me nuts about every wireless headset I tried was the white noise during quiet passages. Completely ruined the experience for me. These are dead silent, no hiss. You'll forget you have headphones on.

They are within your budget too.

Thank you for the response, and you are in fact right, the 170 is the closed system.

I thought a 5.1 or 7.1 headset would offer better immersion since it would help place audio locations as well as give you the surround sound experience? Am I wrong?

I'm no expert on this, but I'll share what little I've learned. Headsets marketed as "5.1" came in two varieties. Those that simulate 5.1 sound and those that have multiple physical drivers. Personally, I found the units that had multiple drivers not only had poor imaging, but they also had the worst overall sound reproduction. Headphones with built in virtual 5.1 processing were hit and miss. They all did something great, and other things not so well.

Conclusion I came to was to get the best sounding headset I could afford, and pair it with the best sound card I could afford, that had the all the sound processing features I needed.

I use a Xonar Essence ST sound card which offers Dolby headphone and 7.1 virtual. But, there are lots of other options out there.

I use the built in audio on my motherboard, though until now I've been using USB headsets so I have no idea of the quality of my motherboards audio lol. These do connect with Standard Audio (I believe 3.5mm is the standard headphone jack?) I don't see the cable in the photos for the 170 but they wouldn't leave a cable out for a closed audio set would they?

Edit: Nevermind looked up the manual and it looks like indeed the difference between the 170 and 180 is that the 170 is closed with leather ears and the 180 is open with velour ear pads. I have a hard time deciding since the velour would be more comfortable but the 170 would prevent audio bleed.

So far the 170's or 180's if I can ever decide are winning out, though I will have to find some semblance of a microphone if I go that route. Anyone else got an opinion for a good wireless headset?

You'll need something like this,

I really like CMSS-3D.

Personally I can't stand closed headphones. I find open to be more comfortable, and less fatiguing. That said, the RS180's are about a 7/10 as far as comfort goes. They're a bit heavy, but I think all wireless headsets will be. And ear cups are a little on the small side. But they do breathe well, and stay cool.

So, 180-200 for the cans, 50 dollars for the sound card, and 67 for the mic, Goodness. That got high quickly.

Does anyone else have other suggestions for a quality wireless headset for immersion?

There is the H Wireless from Steelseries. You can use it with consoles or TV too. You plug the receiver via optic cable and then just sync the headset.

You'd have to try that one though, as I think the bass could be a bit beefier.

That's one I've looked at but $300 is a bit much, when I have had issues with Steelseries products in the past. Especially given that it's gotten sub par reviews in the audio quality dept

So, I googled a bit for great wireless headsets and everything I kept finding was over $200 =_=

is it an old or really cheap microwave ? there not supposed to leak but older ones it tends to happen as the rubber/guard surround starts to perish and gaps form.

To be honest it freaked me out a little when it first happened the first time, at our old house. Microwave was pretty low end, so I had tech take a look and he said it was ok. Still I didn't stand near it when it was on. But it also happened after we moved to new house. Current unit now is a GE Profile convection/microwave. High end unit and it still interferes with headset. But you need to be standing right next to it for it to happen.

Clearly there is some kind of emission that isn't 100% shielded. Even in the higher end units. Scary...

Doesn't effect other devices like iphones or ipads, just the headset gets interference.
