I am looking at putting an outdoor access point on top of the main building and spreading that signal about 500 feet to a bunch of cottages in an area.

------------------------------------Cottage-----------Cottage-----------Cottage-----------Cottage
Main House-------------------------------Cottage-----------Cottage-----------Cottage
------------------------------------Cottage-----------Cottage-----------Cottage-----------Cottage

|----------------------------------------- 500 FT -------------------------------------------------|

That is the general layout. Budget is under 2grand.

I think for the price each machine will just join the same wireless SSID. I do not think we can get it so each computer pretty much joins its own network and cant browse other machines. I do not think we can get captive portal in this price.

What I have came up with after talking with a local distributor of some wireless gear

2 x 30 Degree Antenna on roof - http://www.gnswireless.com/GNS1403_WiFi_Antenna.htm

Mount for roof - http://www.gnswireless.com/GNS1433.htm

Access Point - http://www.gnswireless.com/GNS1673.htm

Amplifier - http://www.gnswireless.com/GNS1460.htm

Router - RV042

gonna run a 50ft cable to roof, put splitter up there, rest of gear in basement with a small battery backup unit.

quote was about 1100-1200, then gonna apply as a VAR and good to go.

any suggestions?

Will be deploying AP Isolation

Groundwork isn't an option I assume.

Why not use a wireless bridge to the middle of the group (say, using 802.11a so interference with other AP's isnt an issue), and maybe use WDS from there?

How far is the main building from the first cottage? Considering you can apparently cover all of them with a mere 60 degrees of antenna coverage, it seems to me that it's a bit far, and they are all bunched up...

It doesnt really matter I suppose as nothing negative will come of it, but the system you outlined is completely illegal per FCC regs.

The first cottage is like 20 to 30 feet from the main house. After more research I am thinking of using a 90 degree sector antenna ditching the amplifier as I would be over the limit and should be good. I will point the antenna down.

From the roof I can see all the cottages

I thought I needed amp to correct the antenna length. Both the TR600 is adjustable but I would probably want the 26dBm.
