Wireless drops when...

Hey [H]'s.. Thank you for taking the time to open this thread.

For Christmas, I decided to get my parents brand new laptops. I did this along with buying them a Linksys Wireless N Broadband Router (Model WRT300N) Both of thier new computers have internal wireless, and all that nice crap.The problem is that whenever they recieve an incoming call on their land line (also dsl line) their computers are kicked off-line until the phone is hung up. Even it nobody picks up the phone, it disconnects, and then the connecton comes back after the phone has quit ringing.

I have replaced all the filters on all the phones. I have disconnected all the phones1 by 1 from both the ac power and telephone lines. No matter what wireless phone rings, they are still kicked off for 30-40 seconds. They have a 900mhz phone, a 2.4ghz phone & a 5.8ghz.

So, here I am seeking help, so while I am here with my parents, I dont have to hear them complaining. I did'nt spend over $3800 on two laptops for them so that I would hear my mother say that the computer is a piece of crap.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. The last thing I want to do is buy two caskets..They are really getting on my last nerves.

EDIT: @ 11:44PM. Oh, I forgot to mention, I have changed the wide channels, and standard channels to all the available options, and it still happens.
Also forgot to mention that the wireless is fine when we make a call out.
It only goes down when there is an incoming call.
 
Have you unplugged all of the phones and extensions and then tried to ring the house?

Is it the wireless that goes down or the dsl? Do they still have a connection to the router?

I am used to UK wiring but a single wire carries the ring noise down the line and i am wondering if it is a wire that is broken somewhere which will cause your net to disconnect.

if with all phones unplugged it still drops the dsl link you can guess there is a crossed or broken wire somewhere. If possible unplug all extensions and try with just the router plugged into the main socket and ring the house again.

One of your cordless phones is trampling on the wireless network. Not uncommon at all.

Wireless N is still in the 2.4 Ghz range right? Get rid of that 2.4Ghz cordless and see if it clears up the problem. I bet thats it.

Most likely the correct answer. Yes, N still does use the 2.4GHz range, although the band can be widened to 40MHz vs 20MHz.

My parents have the same problem, but my mother refuses to accept it is her "old faithful" cordless phone. ("Didn't they think of this when they designed this crap??!?!")

This is why I set my parents new condo up with 5.8ghz phones and Wireless-G. IT all works together without any problems.
 
My best guess as to why its only on an incoming call is because the phone base broadcasts on every, or most channels when it receives a call.

Try changing the channel to 1, 6, and 12 to see if it helps.

these channels are designated by the FCC and such around the world. thats why alot of residential equipment uses same frequencies.

but i agree. remove all phones form house and call house. if you still drop DSL then you are getting random volts somewhere where you should not. If you call the house and it still works either upgrade phones or move wireless phone as far from the router or laptosp as possible.

Ummm, the 2.4GHz band is unregistered and therefore no need to license that band. FCC has nothing to do with it.

The FCC allocates ranges of of radio frequency for particular uses. Some of which is public there for unregulated. this unregulated bandwidth is cluttered with all kinds of garbage including wifi routers and cordless phones. Get a radio antenna and try to broadcast on a frequncy assigned to someone else and see how fast the FCC crawls up your yang. read the link below to see who is assigned to what frequency.

To summarize, its most likely one of the following 3 things:

#1: The cordless phones are stepping on the wireless (most probable).

#2: Filters are needed (not likely--DSL should still *sort of* work, but the phones should hear static on the line if DSL is in use).

#3: Phone/DSL line has a fault (fair possibility; 70-80% of all networking problems are cabling related).
