I got a buddy who recently moved to the moutains on the east coast. They cant get DSL or cable but the city they live in does provide free wireless, all be it very slow. The issue i have is in his house the signal is very poor but outside seems to be OK. So i was thinking about a wireless antenna outside and just run a cable inside.

For my issue. I see alot of these types of products online but have no first hand experience and was hoping someone could throw out a suggestion.

Second i know i could get a wireless PCI card and run it direct to the PC but i want to share thru a router. Any suggestions on a router that would accept wan from an antenna and share it over ethernet?

And yes i know i can use ICS but im trying to avoid that debockle.

Running a cable to a pci card will work very poorly, because coax loss at 2.4GHz is terrible unless you deal with think cabling. I would suggest gutting an AP and putting it in a weatherproof box, and set it up outside using POE to power it. Then all you would need to run inside would be a Cat5 cable, and plug it into a hub/switch or directly into a PC.

I thought about that and my only concern is in the east coast mountians it gets pretty cold and with the heat of the AP, condensation could be an issue on the circuitry.

Right, that's what the weatherproof box would be for. Do a google search for weatherproofing an AP, as I've seen several done, and some of those have been in cold climates.

yeah that will keep the rain out but air contains moisture and as the box gets colder the AP will generate at least some heat on its electircal conections and cause condensation. Ill still look into that idea though. Thanks

My thoughts exactly.

Linksys WRT54GL, 25ft (ballpark) LMR 400 with RPTNC on one end, N type male on the other, yagi directional outdoors.

Somewhere in the neighborhood of $100.

You might get lucky and run the WRT54GL in WDS repeater mode in the attic facing the AP and just repeat wireless to indoors for the price of the WRT54GL alone.
