Wireless bridge setup

My neighbors asked me to help them connect their MSNTV2 box to their wireless router. For those that are not familiar with MSNTV2 you can check it out here http://www.msntv.com/pc/. They were formerly using dialup to access the internet through the device.

I tried to get one of the supported usb adapters but none of them are in production any longer. The one I purchased off of Amazon turned out to be an unsupported version.

The only other option that the manual listed was to setup a wireless bridge. I don't have any experience with wireless bridges. I purchased a Netgear Wg602v4 Access Point. There wasn't much documentation. So I set it to Client mode, set the SSID, security settings and WEP key. It isn't connecting to the wireless router.

Here is what it lists the client mode as:

Client Mode - In this mode, the WG602 will operate as a client bridge only, and send all traffic to the remote AP or peer device. If selected, you must reconfigure the device after reboot.
If using MAC Clone, enter the MAC Address here. The device does a MAC address translation to support multiple Ethernet devices simultaneously. It replaces the source link addresses of all frames transmitted from the wireless interface, and restores the destination link addresses of all frames received by the wireless interface to their real ones.

You have the right idea in theory. As to whether or not there are quirks with the implementation of the gear which cause problems, that can't be known without trying the specific gear.

You should get the AP connecting in client mode before going any further. The docs were specific about a reboot requirement after switching to client mode. I'd do that and re-enter the wireless parameters at that point, and also try the site survey.

Note that the bridge and the client computer might need another reboot to establish connection using the new configuration. If this doesn't work, you might need to assign a static IP to the computer to get back into the bridge's configuration to check/change it further.

It's reasonable to disable wireless security while you're configuring the network, and to reintroduce it incrementally. However, WEP should be avoided if possible in favor of WPA2.
